Avatars weaving after July 2021 release [1.15.0]

I rode England yesterday, ‘Great Loop’, and the swerves were ridiculous. Every time I came up to another rider, or another one came near me, there was the radical swerve. Even after ‘making contact’. It was really distracting. Make it stop…

And it wasn’t just me.

Why is this happening? It seems a new ‘feature’.

My experience yesterday, in England, was both eventually swerve, and it looks so crazy… I think only once or twice, for no apparent reason, there was no bilateral swerving, but the majority of it was both swerving…

not been on for a while and now when you pass somebody or get passed the avatar tacks wildly.
It’s ridiculous.

Agreed, I was riding in London on Friday and I thought I’d missed a pub crawl out something!

Brave of you to assume there is testing  . I absolutely love Zwift, but I am getting more and more convinced they are all about quantity of updates over quality.

I had this issue in London yesterday, was absolutely nauseating! And it also seemed sometimes that when someone was behind / approaching me, my avatar would also swerve out then. I was pretty happy to switch off after half an hour of that mess.

England will drive on the right as soon as America adopts metric :stuck_out_tongue:

Happening in London too.

And it seems to be other riders more than my avatar that is doing the major weaving . I seem to keep a “reasonable line” although I am being pushed to try and go round those riders so get weaved as a result.

Yeah the level of bugs I can see introduced in the last few releases while most of the user base is away doing real world riding in the summer ( Most of Zwifts customer base is in the Northern Hemisphere) is quite scarey . Without users to test stuff its looking a bit wild west here …

My guess is they can’t test it - they just simply don’t have the infrastructure that replicates the realities of the userbase with thousands of global remote connections.

It would make sense to have an opt-in beta version for those who like to live on the bleeding edge. Test for a week or 2 before making a decision on a wider release. I would happily be part of that group to see changes first and take the risk, especially if I have the option to roll back to the stable version if I need to.

No they can’t test every combination but these bugs aren’t being reported on obscure setups we’re talking about MacBooks or Apple TV

Yeah I don’t mean device types per se, more the ability to simulate a wider number of users connecting with different methods / lag / latency. Or maybe even the ability to simulate packs on the game fullstop.

Clearly the testing isn’t adequate, but I doubt it is something they are ignoring - I think beta releases would make sense to solve something that is clearly a big problem. Feature releases are still extremely slow, and you would like to think that slowdown coincides with an increase in quality, which it certainly hasn’t.

Yes, instead of forcing everyone to download the latest update with no choice in the matter give people a week to choose if they want to be a beta tester for the latest update or continue using a stable version. All Zwift needs to do is give the option, “Install latest update?” on the log in screen.

For PC and Mac users the update has always been forced but up to a month or two ago iOS and Android users had the option to stay on the old version if they had auto updates turned off. Last month they gave you a week before you had to update. This month I think the update was compulsory.

I recently saw Shooj mention that the updates are now forced on all OS platforms. It might have just started with this update, or maybe the June update.

totally agree with the sentiment.

there’s no excuse for the messy releases. they need to plan for this better. in particular, they drop a bomb and then disappear for a weekend while a thread like this one piles up. that’s a guaranteed path to PR disaster.

but i think it’s also clear that there are a ton of variables that are difficult to account for in testing:

  • bluetooth drivers and updates
  • OS updates (or lack thereof) across many platforms
  • USB drivers and updates
  • graphics card drivers and updates
  • trainer updates/connectivity issues
  • power meter/cadence meter/heartrate meter updates/connectivity issues
  • signal interference
  • underpowered hardware
  • network issues
  • router, network setup problems
  • mismatched game versions
  • companion app
  • high or low volume of riders at once

that’s a lot more snags than a typical video game likely has to deal with.

a beta version that can “bake in the wild” would contain the PR damage substantially, and also set expectations much more clearly. i’m sure it’s not trivial to get to that, but it seems worth it.

even if this is an 80-20 problem, where the complaints are contained to a “minority” of users, the amount of negative comments on here from that group really puts a damper on the general enthusiasm for an otherwise awesome product. those folks are justified in their displeasure, don’t get me wrong; they don’t want to do the beta testing without signing up for it!

Hi, I have found my avatar does not weave when using my Sterzo Smart, but does if there is not my steering device connected.

The plot thickens…Is this Zwift’s way of making steering relevant in the game??? LOL

Hadn’t been on since this update.
Please please fix this ASAP. Its so annoying I won’t be using zwift again until its fixed.

I find it unfathomable that this got past testing. Does Zwift even use Zwift?
It’s hardly an obscure bug that was hard to notice.

this was my experience exactly at London 3R race… It was the first instance i actually came to these forums to blast the “clown show” right after i finished, that i just participated in.
it was horrible, it didnt seem like people were getting draft- maybe they were (or not), but everyone was just surging and zigzagging making a pretty unpleasant experience…

although racing in Watopia is quite OK.
