Apple TV crash at startup, tvOS 18.3 | [January 2025]

Did you try resetting (factory reinstall, effectively) your ATV and reinstalling Zwift?

I’m running 18.3 and I’ve never seen this problem on my ATV.

I’ll give this a go, thanks

Yes, I have tried all reinstalling and resetting advice but the problem persists.

Since the most recent update (1.86) this issue has worsened. Zwift is requiring 2-3 reloads as it crashes at launch and once paired and on the homepage. It has even crashed when loading a ride or workout since the update. I’m increasingly fed up with Zwift’s treatment of ATV users. We pay the same to use Zwift as all other users. We are always last to get updates and seem to receive poor service and support.

When can we expect an update?.??

I’m having the same issue. Following

This is not true. Zwift still crashes every single time and then starts properly at the second go.

For me it doesn’t matter if i force quit on forehand or whatever. A zwift-reinstall didn’t make no difference.

The problem continues to frustrate. Both Zwift and ATV are updated to the most recent versions (as of April 6th 2025). Please advise and fix!

Happens to me EVERY FEEAKING ASS TIME. This has been going on for years. You keep increasing the price but not fixing this f’ing bug. Stop raising prices and fix it. Freaking A

One price increase since 2017…

Have you tried a factory reset, do you force close Zwift after every use? @Steve_Hammatt doesn’t seem to have these issues and neither do any of my teammates that use Apple TV.

What have Zwift support told you when you’ve reported this issue to them? They can access server-side logs which can tell them what’s going on.

As Mike said, you need to make sure you always force-close the Zwift app after using it, and don’t leave it running in the background otherwise weird stuff can happen. And a reset back to factory defaults is a good troubleshooting step, and is also very quick to do.

Same.

Force shutting Zwift after every session, then turn off Apple TV

Next day when starting up Zwift always crashes the first time, just before the login screen
2nd time Zwift will work properly and no problems.

So I just calculate this extra time in as my starting ritual

You’d need to scroll back through this topic to understand the exchanges I’ve had with Zwift. I’ll try to summarise here:
Quit Zwift after use
Closed/switched off ATV
Restarted Zwift from Home Screen
Deleted and reinstalled Zwift
Reset ATV from scratch
Reinstalled Zwift
Updated Zwift sequentially from 1.83 to 1.87
Checked ATV version is current - repeatedly
Had Zwift check logs and this confirmed the issue and attempts to resolve it
At one stage Zwift admitted there was an issue and that they were working on a solution
So, as you might guess “ turning it on and off again” is NOT the solution. And no it doesn’t seem to affect all ATV users, just a few unlucky people like me!

Thanks, but I was replying to the post from Guy where he gives zero details of his interactions with Zwift support.

Yep! He was simply agreeing with me that he had the same issue!

I am having this problem also with Apple TV crashing on startup every time I try to start the Zwift App. Is there a fix for this yet?

Perfectly stable once the app is running.

Here is the official Zwift statement:

Thanks for reaching out! I’m Hanane from the Zwift Support Team, happy to assist you.
Thanks again for your detailed summary and for your continued patience, it really means a lot to us.

Our development team is actively working on resolving this Apple TV issue as quickly as possible. We know how frustrating this has been, especially for such a long-time and dedicated Zwifter, and we truly appreciate you hanging in there with us.

In the meantime, some users have found a temporary workaround that may help: after launching Zwift and reaching the pairing screen, wait about 30–60 seconds before selecting a route or workout. This short pause can sometimes reduce the likelihood of a crash when starting an activity.

We understand how important a smooth Zwift experience is, and we’re doing everything we can to get this sorted.
Please be patient with us as we work toward a permanent solution. If there’s anything else you need or if you just want an update, don’t hesitate to reach out, we’re here and happy to help however we can.

I’m also having this same issue, and it’s getting worse. It used to only fail at the first startup, but sometimes it fails on multiple occasions. Tonight it failed about 8 times - first immediately after starting Zwift, and then after pairing and trying to start a workout.

Thanks for the ‘just wait a bit’ workaround suggestion. I’ll give that a go if the current app reinstall doesn’t help (based on other experiences here I’m not expecting it to).

Have you reported this to Zwift Support Team? If not please do and reference this thread.

Will do. The waiting work around didn’t help. After a few more crashes I gave up on the workout and route combination that was consistently crashing and I tried entering an event - no problem.
