Apple TV 4K crashing

Over the last few weeks, my Apple TV 4K is crashing. There is no set amount of time or distance it crashes at. It doesn’t do this with any other app.

When riding the screen will go black, and pause your activity. After a minute, sometimes up to 5 it will come back to Zwift and you can resume your ride exactly where you left off before the screen went black. You don’t need to reconnect anything, the screen goes black and you’re screwed until it goes back to Swift. Sometimes it flickers between Zwift and the black screen of death.

I have uninstalled, reinstalled Swift to result. I have done return to factory settings as well, this has not worked, also updated the Apple TV to the latest software, but nothing seems to work.

Are you force-quitting the Zwift app after every use? Doing this typically clears up most issues with ATV.

This isn’t a crash, since as you say you can come back to exactly where you left off, and also the flickering thing

It sounds to me more like an issue between your TV and your ATV. Have you tried a different HMDI cable?

Hi @Mark_Feeney_CANYON_C, welcome to Forums! I’m Francisco from Zwift Support.

It’s super annoying when your Apple TV starts glitching out in that way at the middle of a ride.

I noticed that your device and game are updated (TVOS 18.5.0 and app version 1.90.0). It’s possible that the issue might be between your Apple TV and your TV, as Steve mentioned.

Sometimes, a simple cable swap or using another HDMI port on your TV can resolve intermittent black screens and flickering.

Besides, check your TV’s resolution settings and the settings on your Apple TV. If they aren’t aligned with what Zwift outputs, that could cause the sort of intermittent issues you’re experiencing.

Try force-quitting the app after you finish riding, as some users have found this clears up lingering glitches on the Apple TV.

Let us know if you resolve it differently.

I originally wasn’t force quoting but I was turning the Apple TV off each time rather than letting it go to sleep. I’ll try force quitting everytime now

Thanks for the reply!

I’ve switched out my hdmi cable a couple of times. I’ll buy a new hdmi cable as well to make sure I give it the best chance of success. Today I rode with no issues which was good. I’ll double check the settings on the tv to make sure they match the output of the AppleTV.

I will start force quitting after each use rather than just turning the Apple TV off. Hopefully it’s all sorted now. It worked great for the past couple of years but started doing this out of the blue a couple of weeks ago.

Thanks Steve! I’ll buy a new hdmi to see if this helps
