Zwift Climb Portal [2023]

No it will direct you pretty much straight to the portal

I noticed that if I’m watching another rider, when the enter the Climb Portal, I get kicked out and auto-watch a different rider not in the Climb Portal.
So, it seems that you can only see the Climb Portal if you are actually riding the Climb Portal.

The First rule of Climb Portal is you do not Talk in Climb Portal.

I think that’s also the second rule

Same thing here. Why would only the first completed climb of a stage show as ā€œcompetedā€? Is this a bug or a feature? I like checking off all the routes, kinda bummed it’s not showing a ā€œcompleteā€ sticker next to all the climbs I have completed.

I don’t know if anyone else has noticed this yet and I’m not about to go through 300 posts to check.

But as you descend you can do a u-turn at each checkpoint and get a free spin of the wheel. 9 more opportunities to pick up 250xp on the way down.

Of course only the most devious and unscrupulous type of person would use such an exploit for easy XP and Zwifters are honest, reputable people who would never do such a thing (#spiritofgravel).

I only post it here to make sure that Zwift closes this loophole now instead of allowing it to continue for the next few years.

Best thing to do is manually select the climb you want and then just navigate away from the portal when you start to do your 1hr and then loop back to the portal for your climb.

Not sure if teleporting will upset your initial selection of portal climb though. Not tried yet

@Mdizzle Thanks! That’s what I’d hoped I’d be able to do, but given another person’s reply it sounded like I wouldn’t be able to manually navigate away from the portal if I selected a specific climb. So, I ended up just doing a normal free ride and climbing yesterday’s scheduled climb, which was great! Next time I’ll try your suggestion and see if it works.

I second this.
If nothing else, change the stars back to the segment number as you pass them on the way down so you know how much is left of the descent.

If you use the u-turn trick after each star you can see which banner you’re at

Something new, so better than nothing.

Pretty damn boring for the longer climbs.

I’m stunned that users think this very lazy implementation is acceptable. Are Zwift users just so starved of change that the mere suggestion of anything new is enough?

Every time Zwift delivers a sub par product, they leave the window open for a real competitor to possibly take their market share.

I’m starting to get a Nokia vibe…

there been lots of gripes about the graphics and how its been implemented, i’m sure that zwift will be taking onboard both the positive criticism and the negative stuff

Has Zwift changed the strategy for the type bonus stuff you get when passing through arches?

In the beginning I earned 10xp, 250xp or a feather.
But since yesterday (?) I get a lot of 10xp, feathers and quite useless vans / aero helmets, in three rides only 2x250xp.

Or do I have to ride new climbs to get more 250xp bonuses?

Having ridden all of the climb portal climbs , a few of them multiple times (2x Tourmalet,3x Platzerwatsel and 3x Puy de dome) I can positively say that I am loving this new addition to zwift, best new feature in years, I see many people are complaining about the graphics and yes there could be a few changes made but personally my biggest gripe is that Zwift wants to limit the amount of climbs available to ride at any time after July to just one, please please allow us too still choose from a number of climb portal climbs to ride on any given day after July

And yet here we are. ā€œSub parā€ being open for debate, but nearly 8 years on and no serious competition has entered the arena. At least, no one who has offered enough to lure a critical mass away from Zwift and cement themselves as the market leader. Several so some things better than Zwift, but do other things worse. Not least the social experience side of things.

If anyone has the money, talent and will to ā€œdo an iPhoneā€ in the indoor cycling sphere, that would be a very exciting proposition, but it seems to be a competitor needs to be head and shoulders ahead of Zwift in almost every aspect in order to lure significant numbers away.

Of course, the scene might just fragment into smaller but highly targeted areas. Some people might go to product X because they value photorealistic graphics over socialisation, others to product Y because they want a highly accurate real world simulation of racing, but don’t care too much if the graphics aren’t great etc.

In any case, all platforms will no doubt release things some of their users don’t like. It’s impossible to please everyone without narrowing and clearly defining the product vision and sticking closely to that no matter what.

I’ve done a few Climb Portal Climbs and I think it’s a great addition for Zwift users. Obviously users who doubt like climbs / climbing will not be so enthusiastic but it’s not mandatory and could easily be used for workouts or training. Best comparison I can make is it’s like Garmin’s climb pro on Zwift I don’t mind the look / layout and if it means climbs can be added fairly easily then great hopefully it will remain a part of Zwift.

I would much prefer proper climbing routes, but the feedback on this feature is better than I expected. A lot of people really enjoy it. This is a successful feature despite the somewhat polarized response. It seems clear that the cost of route development is much too high right now and improvements to make it less work would be welcome.

It would also be great if roads on the way down were not all the same color. The blue is acceptable for the most part but occasionally you kick up to the 13% gradient and it’s still blue. It’s a little bit disorienting. I think if it’s going to kick up to an extreme, the road should not be blue

Also, on the mini map, the be segment markers and stars are so much bigger than the arrow indicating one’s location that is often hard to see where one is on the route. The arrow is also a yellow orange color which blends in with most of the gradients which doesn’t help.

That said, overall I’m enjoying the portal!

Just a quick thank you.

Having now had a crack at 4 of the portal climbs, from the easiest up to the Puy de Dome, I think I have enough kms to pass my judgement. I have only good things to say about it. I love having access to more climbs - if we have around 4-8 at once from this point on I will be ecstatic. The graphical style with the gradient colours works really well for me with the challenge of the climbs and I find them useful for both measuring effort and knowing relief is coming.

There are so many things that Zwift could do with the climb portal and I am looking forward to sampling climbs from around the world on whatever rotation gets set up. I am imagining spells for specific countries or Tours being showcased. Maybe even the Victorian Alps will find their GPS data used for a Season.

Thank you Zwift for adding more of my favorite riding into the game.
