Virtual shifting: not working or am I not getting it?

I’m new to Zwift (Zwift Ride) and I’m trying to understand if my virtual shifting is working as it should. It’s weird, because ERG mode seems to work fine and my guess is that virtual shifting is basically the same, where the app is sending a signal to the kickr core to adjust the resistance when you change gears. So if there was a connection issue between the app and the Wahoo kickr, I would imagine I would also experience it using ERG, but as said: everything works fine with ERG.
Now, about the problem (ERG off and virtual shifting enabled):
I don’t really feel any change in the first 7-8 gears, and then all of the sudden I feel a rather big change.

I did some test on a flat road, where in a bit more than a minute, I go from Gear 1 up to Gear 12, keeping the RPM the same:

  • 00:00-00:03: Gear 1: 70 RPM, 50 W
  • 00:03-00:09: Gear 2: 70 RPM, 50 W
  • 00:09-00:16: Gear 3: 70 RPM, 50 W
  • 00:16-00:21: Gear 4: 70 RPM, 50 W
  • 00:21-00:28: Gear 5: 70 RPM, 50 W
  • 00:28-00:34: Gear 6: 70 RPM, 50 W
  • 00:34-00:39: Gear 7: 70 RPM, 50 W
  • 00:39-00:46: Gear 8: 70 RPM, 50 W
  • 00:46-00:50: Gear 9: 70 RPM, 56 W
  • 00:50-00:55: Gear 10: 70 RPM, 65 W
  • 00:55-01:04: Gear 11: 70 RPM, 72 W
  • 01:04-01:15: Gear 12: 70 RPM, 82 W

As you can see, in the first 8 gears, there’s really no difference in watt output, nor do I feel a difference myself. Then, from gear 9 onwards, I immediately feel the change and see the watt output change on the screen.

I connect to the app (macOS) directly (not via the companion app) via Bluetooth, and ERG is off. Virtual shifting is enabled in the settings (and does seem to work in higher gears). There’s no delay between me clicking the button on the steering wheel and the change in the UI in-game.

Anyone seeing similar results? Can’t really explain it since the connection seems to be OK and working in ERG mode.

No idea what the issue is but have you taken a look at your shifting configuration? There are several modes so you can set it to shift like SRAM or Shimano.

Basically, you can set it up to act like a 1x where clicking the right button goes up a gear (harder) and the left button goes down. Or, you can set it up like a 2x where it will either work like SRAM or Shimano - right button goes up a gear on the “cassette” and left goes down, and both shift the “Front chainring” to the “other” ring, or like Shimano where I guess the right lever buttons shift the cassette up and down and the left lever buttons shift the front chainring up or down.

Have you used the Wahoo app to setup/test/calibrate the trainer (assuming you got the full Ride kit with the Wahoo KICKR Core). Maybe it needs a firmware update?

Thanks for your reply!
I have it set up so that left 1x click goes down, and right 1x click goes up, and I can see the game UI react to that accordingly.

I haven’t done anything in the Wahoo app apart from updating the firmware. Maybe I need to run that setup/test/calibrate thing, but it wasn’t mentioned anywhere I need to so I didn’t even know it existed  .

Yes, I have the full ride with Kickr Core.
Firmware and software are up to date, both for Zwift and Wahoo.

HIya @binoculars welcome to Zwift forums!

Shuji at Zwift HQ here. On Wahoo’s support site, they recommend you calibrate after updating to the latest firmware. Please follow the links in that article to do a manual spindown, and let us know if that improves things?

Hi @shooj, thanks for offering help.
I did a spindown in the Wahoo app and tried again, but unfortunately the problem is not solved: no change whatsoever in the first gears. Also rechecked if all firmware is up to date, and it was. I also emailed support via the chat bubble on the Zwift website but no reply so far.

I’m experiencing a similar issue. My Wahoo Kickr Move (received just 6 days ago) suddenly stopped working yesterday. The resistance no longer functions, and changing gears with virtual shifting using my Zwift Play doesn’t make any difference. I’ve completely lost the free ride experience—there’s no resistance, no virtual shifting, and I’m just coasting the entire time.

After this happened, I closed Zwift, auto installed the latest Zwift update (on my Windows gaming computer), and tried again, but the same issue persisted. I powered off all nearby devices, turned on only my Mac Mini M4, installed a fresh copy of Zwift, and tested it without using my Wahoo Elemnt ROAM V2, HR monitor, or any other external devices. Unfortunately, the same symptoms remain—no resistance, and virtual shifting still makes no difference.

are you connecting using bluetooth? have you updated the new kickr’s firmware? have you updated the play controllers firmware?

It’s all up to date, I use my Wahoo Kickr Move via WiFi and my Polar HR via Ant+.

virtual shifting only works via bluetooth, not sure if the wifi will work? try unplugging the ant+ dongle and see if that helps improve things just to rule it out.

power, cadence and resistance via WiFi I meant

virtual shifting, of course it’s the only thing that connects via bluetooth, same settings for 2+ years and since the Zwift and/or Wahoo firmware updates at the end of November, it all started.

I disconnected the ANT+ dongle yesterday as well, it made no difference, turned off all devices, computers, phones that might be nearby, also no difference.

hmmmm… do you get any resistance if you use a different app other than Zwift, could try the wahoo app, I think you can control ERG mode with their app.

With the V6 I tried with other apps and it worked, here in Zwift everything was fine with the new Kickr Move until yesterday (my v6 started with the same problem) and yesterday out of nowhere a few km from finishing a route in Watopia I lost the resistance … coasting …

Yesterday I had no time but to try with my mac mini but it was the same result.

It is on the free rides (for now), on the workout I have resistance, the ERG is working.

Upload some logs to zwiftalizer.com if you want to see if there were any pairing interruptions

I would also log a support case with Wahoo ASAP and see if they have thoughts

Okay thank you!

As additional info the same thing started to happen at the end of November with my Kickr V6.

At minute 55-57 I remember I lost the resistance, I was in Sugar Cookie.

then I tried 3 times after restarting Zwift (it received an update on the first restart), with and without HR, etc but no different result.

Hope this helps @binoculars too.

Bluetooth looks solid in those reports (and that’s how WiFi pairing is categorized as well)

in the video you can see how in the first few seconds I raise gear and there is no increase in power.

I normally do 180-200w at 85-90 rpm if i have the gear in 14-15. I sent an email to Zwift Support yesterday, waiting for it.

coasting…
