It will depend if what the system is meant to do.
If it is to be a reward system, like XP where you get points for distance and elevation, I think the reward should be positive for all.
If the system should reflect the riders level and be used to split riders into pens, a reduction for a bad performance is in place.
I dont like the idea of a reward system as you put it, as that would just encourage more underhandedness by the users than there is now - And moves it towards a game over a race. The more it is turned into a game, the more people are happy to cheat (either minute or large actions) as far as my thoughts on that go.
Rider level shouldnt just mean it is used to split riders across pens - that should be the basis for Race results and performance metrics…
At the very end of a season I might have a ZP rank that is somewhere in the ballpark of what I could do, but it would take me the whole season to get there (I guess unless I did the tiny races as my weekly event). I’m sure I’m not the only one
I imagine it would be really bad if they just used ZP with no initial seeding based on compound score or CE. I do prefer the ZR system over the ZP rank. Of course both models need a good seeding per season as well.
At the end of the day, all I want and I suspect most racers want, is a system that puts them in pens with real similar ability racers.
ZP vs ZR for me:
ZP - I can be very good racer for my Cat but still have low global rank due to race quality I select (cant avoid actually but that’s besides the point, it can be easily gamed).
ZR - I cant fault my ranking since I have good enough history to seed me well in the first place
Pens based on ZR would be awesome… cant wait.
I feel we are going down the path of CE again when we all think Zwift will deliver X and they serve up Y.
The ideal could be a balance between a ranking system putting people in the correct pens which racers don’t feel so inclined to sandbag, because if they do then they lose out on a feel-good gamified points/rewards system.
Of course that could lead to a different type of cheating, but at least the racing would feel fairer (hopefully).
There is no reason there can’t be a ranking system (about accuracy), and a points system (about reward).
Pens can be sorted however the organiser wants, because they know best.
I assure you, 110% that we baked in custom pen definition to initial absolute requirements of this.
