Tour of Watopia [October 2023]

obviously we all know the Zwift website is where game related info goes to die… it seems that they are focusing more on having this information in the game UI rather than on the website. Clicking on the ToW tile then takes you into the different stages and all the routes are listed there.

I tried to use powerups afterwards in Makuri with RP Miguel it worked fine with ZP. It also worked fine in last stage of Pretzelfest. I did not do anything with ZP in between.

Who’d have thought of that…

Any info what routes are available on stage-5. Is it only new up coming routes or any current routes?. I have done 4 stages already as a solo ride, wondering if I can do any stage-5 routes now.

Stage 5 will include the new roads and I suspect that Zwift will want to make a bit of a deal about that to encourage lots of users.

Not surprised. New roads are always very welcome on Zwift. New roads will released October 25th or something like that I guess, if I remember right.

I’m a little surprised (and disappointed) that the climb portal isn’t one of the options for stage 3 of ToW. So far it’s been pretty ho-hum with no new routes or anything else to keep it interesting…

Yeah, I was also surprised they didn’t have a climb portal route as part of the climb category for the ToW. I mean the climb portal itself is not technically Wattopia, but there’s an entrypoint from Wattopia, so it would still work fine as a Tour of Watopia event route for the climb week.

Seems like a great way to introduce a lot of new people to the climb portals.

Can anyone explain if there is some sort of late joining going on in ToW, and if this is by design?

I just noticed this when approaching the top of the Alpe on today’s ride. Apparently the guy ahead had skipped part of the course.

(Just for good measure: I know these are not races, and I dont care about coming 2nd to this guy. I just haven’t read anything about late joining and I was wondering how it works in practice: Are you just teleported to a random group when you late join, or how does it work?)

Late join has always been a thing with ToW and similar events. Yep, you’re just teleported into the pack somewhere. Not sure how far back you are from the front, but not at the tail end.

Cheers, thanks for clearing that up.

With coffee breaks, late joining and zpower riders all being possible in these group rides, I’m surprised how many people are still up for racing in them.

I guess people are desperate enough for pens that are actually populated (outside ZRL)

I think a lot of it is that racing the people around you is fun in the moment, regardless of whether you win something, whether you even know who they are, whether you’re even riding the same course, etc. I enjoy getting all racey at the start of an event with a bunch of people I know are climbers and are going to absolutely drop me at the first real climb. I’m still laying down some hammers (small hammers, like Shawshank Redemption rock hammers, but still) on the flats with them because it’s fun.

Is late join definitely enabled?

I have to click join event before the time runs out, if it takes a second to then join it puts you in with others but I haven’t been able to join after the starting time.

You can only late join from the event display in the menu screens when you start Zwift up. You can’t do it from in game as the clock will run out.

I like to treat these events like races - not only because they’re a great workout that’s usually more motivating than staring at an interval countdown, but they’re an easy way to practice drafting and other techniques important to racing.

The ZwiftHacks events site will tell you when late join is enabled. Almost all group rides have it on.

Another external site we have to use in order to know what is going on in Zwift

Why I use major zwift group ride events as just endurance rides, recovery, or cadence workouts with late join and the other features to access the ride. Just ride and enjoy.

I like to give Zwift a hard time when, I think, they deserve it but:

Q: Will late join be enabled for the Tour of Watopia?

A: Late join will be enabled for the Tour of Watopia, but we recommend joining at the start of a group ride. By joining late, you may be unable to participate in some fun surprises throughout the rides—plus, you can always complete the route on demand on your schedule.

Anyone see any fun surprises yet or is this just copy from the last TofW that had the dino costumes, bike swaps, etc.?
