before the phased release, Zwift sent the new version out to all platforms at the same time, Apple would always take a while to “verify” the new version before users could download it.
Now with the phased release it takes even longer for iOS and Apple TV users to get the new version.
Adding to what Mike said here, Android/iOS/ATV releases used to need app store approval in the time before phased releases were introduced. That typically didn’t take long at all - it was often instant and would rarely take much longer.
With the phased releases that we have now, Zwift made a conscious decision to start the phased release of the Android version at the same time as the Windows/MacOS versions, and to delay the iOS/ATV releases by 24 hours. You’ll need to ask Zwift why they made this decision.
I repeat, the approval delay for the various app stores is negligible.
Feel free to repeat again, but in my real life work I’ve had delays in getting an app through the app stores when they have objected to a small detail that has never been a problem before in numerous releases. Then we have to go back and change that and submit it again.
Usually sets things back a day or two. Thats not negligible.
If you are trying to launch multiple platforms at the same time that can ruin your plans.
It took a few minutes but with the help of Zwiftmap, my calculator, and notes on my IPad to keep track of what roads I already counted. I took the length of Coastal Crown Loop, subtracted the coastal road section (so it was just the part with the new road), and then added the section with switchbacks to the top to get ALL the road and it came out to be 6.2 miles (10km).
I feel that’s a good amount, not SUPER short. A good road to match it up with (distance-wise) to show in perspective how much is getting added is Tempus Fugit (one way). Which is about 6 miles. The coastal road is about twice that at about 20K (12 miles). Plus it will feel like more because it’s a climb.
I mean, that’s not a bad thing. When we got the desert back in April 2019 (btw, that was the first expansion that I witnessed being released because the last expansion was ADZ in 2018 and I started in January 2019, just a fun fact), that added 6-7 miles of new roads (6 if just counting the road from the desert pens to the LAX roundabout but 7-ish if you include the road that connects it to the “home base” or “main island”, as I call it, because that was where Watopia all started). We got the southern coast last year which was 12-ish miles but compared to the rest of the expansions, that was a big treat because I think that the most we got released in one update before then (excluding new worlds like Scotland) was all that was included in the Epic KOM update which was about 12 and a half miles back in 2016! Plus with how big Watopia is, ANY new road will make for great new big rides or new routes.
I’m still waiting/wondering when/if Zwift will add a new Pretzel Route because (again) the last time they added one was when the desert came out so they still have the bypasses, Titans Grove, Southern Coast, and now The Grade to add in. Also I’m thinking it MAY be cool eventually to have the coast go around the ADZ and maybe meet up with the blocked off mountain side (so you come out of it, maybe a mine or something) that we see when descending into the jungle.
It was said over on FB that new routes associated with these new roads would be released in two batches, if these 8 are the first batch then maybe in the 2nd?
Well, I am much more a pessimist when it come to the Zwift expansions in existing worlds. I am not a fan of the small loopy worlds.
It took 4 years to get the Coastal expansion and a few more months for this. So 25-30 kms over 4 years?
That is really, really glacial paced development when MyWhoosh is releasing not one but two full developed worlds each with over 60kms of new road, not looped/figure 8/over existing tarmac, next week as well. After adding Belgium last August prior to that Australia and Columbia.
So in the grand scheme of things yes, Watopia expansion is great. Years between development is not what you would expect with the monthly cost and additional investor funding.
Makuri, France and Watopia all need more love.
I was just about to say something about Makuri:
In my opinion here are the top roads I’m waiting for (not in order of most to least wanted but just listed):
Mt. Fuji in Makuri
A road that extends the coast
A road (once the coast extends) to the top of the ADZ from the most western side of Watopia.
A velodrome (maybe multiple throughout like one using the underwater roads, a snowy mountain one that kind of resembles a hockey rink, a neon velodrome, and maybe a gravel track are ideas so that way we can have a solution to the crowded-ness of the loop, have more than one).
Eventually maybe Zwift will add a new map. Not any specific one but it’s just cool when we get a new world.
No pressure on Zwift, just ideas that could be eventually on the game.
When someone suggests really new roads, the unanimous response is usually - delete the UCI worlds… rather than have a big extension with 150-200km of completely new roads. The boring routes are really because everyone wants the same familiar flat routes or slightly rolling hills they can punch over.
So I just suggest in return gravel surfaces for places like NY - even Tempus could do with sand storms that cover the road in sand and dirt which would slow everyone down.
If only third parties could get in and start doing some worlds or extensions to places like Innsbruck. Take some of the load off Zwift themselves.
I’d even get back into 3D animation and try doing it- I used to do that years ago. I haven’t done that since 2008 something but you don’t forget it.
If anything it’d be easier now that our computers and other devices aren’t potatoes anymore. in the old days you had to be so careful with polygon count or you’d end up with a slideshow on screen.
People are always asking for a velodrome.
On a trainer, is that going to be different than tempest or Richmond fan flats.
There are some many flat routes already.
