Struggling with Apple TV

Bought an Apple TV 3rd Gen from eBay purely to run Zwift on, as I was fed up of carrying my laptop out to the garage every time I want to use it, plus I got occasional dropouts with the laptop.

I don’t have any other Apple products, so I created an Apple ID. However, despite multiple attempts, factory resets and 3 hours trying last night, I can’t sign in no matter what I do. It just says ‘Can’t connect to the Apple Store’.

I think this might be because Apple now have 2-step verification which can’t be turned off, and the Apple TV doesn’t know how to ask for the code so it just fails. I’ve done some online digging and someone suggested requesting a security code and appending it to the password, this didn’t work either although that may have been because I can’t request a code due to my lack of Apple devices, so I just went to sign in to Apple in my browser and used the code it texted me, unsucessfully.

Any other ideas I can try before Apple support? My other half has an iPhone if that helps, although using her login didn’t work either. I only need the account to download the app and run the device, so if there are any other workrounds I’d be interested to hear. I’ve no inclination to subcribe to Apple TV or use any of the other services.

A ‘Zwift TV’ box pre-loaded with Zwift and no faffing around would be a great seller!

You shouldn’t need an iPhone to get started with an Apple ID. You should be able to set that all up from a browser.

What is the exact model number of the Apple TV? I’m concerned that you have a model that won’t work with Zwift. The 3rd Gen ATV doesn’t support the App Store.

Thanks for the reply. I got an Apple ID fine, I just can’t login to the store.

The model is an Apple TV 4k 32gb, actually looking at the code I think it might be 2nd gen not 3rd gen. I was under the impression they could all run Zwift?

Yes all the 4K models are supported if you can get the app store working.

That’s good news then. So it sounds like a 2nd gen 4k, which is actually a 6th gen ATV (but most people would call it a 4k 2nd gen).
