Wind I don’t think it would change the racing unless it’s a strong wind and braking it would make racing more punchy because you would have to sprint out of the corners but if there is not going to be autobraking and manual braking in corners what are the zwift play braking paddles for ?
I have been trying indievelo and it works perfectly… so steering doesn’t seem to be necessary to implement wind. If riders cannot overlap, and the position is the best for the draft, echelons just happen automatically
A delayed move of non-steering, chasing bikes, to a steering racer ahead who has switched lanes?
Maybe not an exact balance but a “nerf” for steering in the PD 4.1 context.
Why do car games have the option of manual gear box and auto gear box?
I didn’t say there isn’t going to be manual or auto braking in Zwift! I just said there are other priorities (in my opinion).
Im not sure the auto \ manual gearing works as an example.
You have assisted steering which takes the basic or smoothed line, but with manual steering you can take the best or shortest line, problem with steering games is, whilst you do have a draft im not aware of many where it needs to be such a huge part of the game (ive not played racing games for years mind you).
For me, there has to be a reason for using it, otherwise why waste the time\resources\money on it?
Just thinking aloud (typing) - It might need to be advantageous to get the buy in to it, otherwise will people migrate to it if there is no reason.
It is a huge expense to have the controller, about 1 year of Zwift subscription. I would assume that steering will make riding and racing more interactive and fun. Using the steering well should give you an advantage over someone that haven’t practiced steering and over someone that don’t have steering and breaking.
Like auto and manual gear box example, with the auto gearbox you don’t get optimal gear shifting but with manual if done well you can get a lot more acceleration.
Or let’s take FPS games with controller aim assist and KB mouse. the aim assist is good but it does not beat a well trained kb mouse gamer.
But to your point that need to be some sort of control on how people can move across the road during a sprint. Even IRL there are rules that you need to hold your line in the sprint.
It can be something as simple as in the last 300m your avatar (when not in the bunch) will naturally move to the center of the road and steering will turn off.
Or zig zagging over the road will scrubb some of your speed so that it wont be worth doing it.
Suggestions for a better title.
Remember that the controller is not only a steering device. For me the main “win” of the controller is the improved navigation (specially for ATV users), and easy access to shortcuts.
Also keep in mind that there is a world out there of users outside of what I call the “racing bubble” for whom little mini-games like Repack Rush is their thing.
indeed, but will Zwift make this device available worldwide at some point?
I just said this to mate on Saturday, while riding outdoors, that in the last few months (bugs aside) zwift have introduce more new useful and exciting features than they have in years.
I’d rather have new features than more roads any day.
To be honest I don’t know. I hope so. But supply chain and business decisions is not my department, sorry.
Understood. But if the Play hardware offers any advantage in competition by taking advantage of software enhancements, and Play is not available to everyone who wants to buy one, should the software enhancements occur? Not sure what the answer is, just theorizing.
And should being able to afford the cost of the controller give someone a palpable advantage over those that can’t ?
I see the “most likely” qualifier here, so not sure if there’s answer right now, but is there likely to be configurability on the push/pull mapping? Pull to steer and push to brake feels unnatural to me, since I need to pull my brake levers irl and push my handlebars around to steer. Seems like others say the steering is intuitive, but to me and at least a handful of others, it’s not. Hope the option to swap those around might be in the pipeline, similar to axis-inverts on other controllers?
Yeah, at least one example vs all the examples. Let me think about that for a second from a point of view where “iT’s cLeAnEr tHaN IRL rAcInG”. I mean, come on. At least not give the impression that the client side model zwift is using even close to the job these events want it to be… Of course, it is my personal opinion. Everybody has one, right?
As far as other uses for the braking paddles, if you’re in a points race and there are FTS points available, the braking could become an important tool in what I call the game of chicken where everyone slows down (but not too much) to try to be at the back of the pack (but at full speed) right at the start of the segment. I usually slow down too late, shoot through the front of the pack and am on my back foot and slowing down or just trying to re-accelerate as we hit the start of the sprint (so my position is right but my speed is not) or just say “screw it” and try to go solo off the front while every else faff’s around trying to not be the first into the segment. Neither strategy works, but being able to brake when I notice that I need to slow down would allow me to stay at the back of the pack and then accelerate right away to be in the correct spot for FTS points attempts.
Would it be too much to ask to check before making a new topic using another user’s comment as the title/first post?
Done.
I thought you were the first to mention wind.
Ah,… gotcha, now that we have steering you want to penalize users for tactics. You might as well start deflating tires when the weather is cooler and start increasing pressure when it hotter changing the CRR values.
