Checking back in on this discussion. After a couple of years and with the growth of VR, you’d think Zwift would have introduced at least a basic VR experience (e.g. limited to Watopia) for those wanting immersive workouts in VR. There are other platforms out there growing quickly, but Zwift has already built the digital worlds and surely it can’t be that difficult to get something up and running on something like the Oculus platform. Everyone would benefit, including those who hate the thought of wearing a headset to sweat in, because this would inevitably draw more users to the platform, increasing sales…staff…and ultimately making Zwift better for everyone.
We’ve been asking for about 4 years now when Zwift would pull the trigger on VR. It seems they’re content to let these inferior platforms rake in they subscription money they charge. (People are happily paying $20-30 a month just to do virtual rides down google street view or to wave their arms at blocks as they fly across landscapes. Zwift would be far better with real world competition.)
I would guess that even though the worlds are built, the underlying models might not be that compatible with existing VR software.
Yeah I can’t imagine that it would be comfortable or realistic for heavy training
not everyone is heavy training though. Could be nice for just cruising around. Look at the difference no HUD makes on immersivity
I have a oculus rift 2 and I can’t imagine using it ever for Zwift. I’d much rather they focus on other things. Like improved ui and more worlds/routes. I would never use Zwift VR.
Well I have an oculus too and reckon it would be great
Well for people who can’t wait and have a pretty good PC, Oculus quest 2 or HMD that can hook to a PC then you need to do GTA Bike mod with GTA Real VR mod. Its F’ing amazing…

My bike erg gets here today. Diving into the vr potential. I’m already a huge fan of holofit with the concept 2 rower and was planning on biking there. But GTA5 integration? Gtfooh! Gonna have to give that a go.
Back to zwift tho… Why not run zwift on your pc and stream to your oculus quest via virtual desktop?

I have been doing that since 2017 with my vive. In fact I have never used zwift on a flat screen, Ive always used it in VR. That’s why I was really excited when they showed off zwift in VR at some trade show way back then. GTA Bike with the GTA real mod reinforces this call for Zwift to have a VR version. Its just on another level. you feel like you are there, like you are biking outside. The are some flaws with this setup (GTA bike computer does not show in VR, GTA updates can break the mod) and it takes a good PC with good graphics card (I have a GTX 2080) but now I’m doing a lot of my indoor biking with it to break things up from just doing zwift. Some of the riders have cancelled their zwift subscription and just do GTA bike
This is awesome. thanks for replying. Not sure my PC will cut it. I recently upgraded the video card to an MSI Radeon RX570 with 8gb ram for $250. It was an affordable way to get me to the min spec to play half-life Alyx on the oculus quest 2 which was awesome. Not the best performance for that beast of a game but it was good enough and I finished the game which is saying something… I’m old what can I say. I have a lot of ■■■■ to do.
Otherwise I am running an i7-6700 at 4ghz with 16GB ram, solid state drive that may be too small for GTV at this point, I have a D drive thats 1TB though … What do you think? Doable?

Well there’s a reason that a one year old thread has 4 votes. No one cares.

Except all the people replying to the post that’s been around for a year

Give it a try craig, I only have 16GB of ram and a i7-6700 too!
You might have to put it do medium or low settings. (there’s a bat file with GTA Real mod that can do this)

53 responses (many from the same users) when Zwift has 100k+ users really should explain to you why we don’t have VR.
Not sure why you are on here bothering with this thread if it does not interest you. Is it really worth your time?

I would suspect that, in terms of priority, this would fall (very) far down the list of things to consider at Zwift HQ - there is far lower hanging fruit that, if addressed, would make a tangible difference for a larger portion of the user base.
I can see the in principle attraction of VR but, with the current technology, the mere thought of trying to do any meaningful effort on a bike with a bulky thing strapped to my face makes me feel nauseous.

You might want to ask then why there are so many fitness apps on the oculus quest…
Not saying that its not something that some people would be interest in, merely suggesting that only an extremely small portion of the user base would use this and, as such, Zwift is likely to focus its attention on developments that will benefit more of its users.
Hi Peter,
I just bought an Oculus Quest 2 and plan to try it out with Zwift. Is my understanding correct that I would run Virtual Desktop and have a wireless (wifi) connection to my PC and that’s all I need to make it work? Can you share any settings in Virtual Desktop if applicable, I haven’t used VD before I assume it’s like bigscreen where you can have different environments with a large screen.
This thread is a couple of years old so I also wanted to ask if this is still the best way to use Zwift in VR?
I found some older threads or articles online about a BETA version of Zwift that supports VR but it sounds like they are no longer developing that, which is really too bad. I’ll bet being able to move your head around in VR and see behind you, your handlebars, and all around the environment is much more immersive than Virtual Desktop which is basically just making a huge screen.
Thanks!

Nathalie_V, how was your experience with the Oculus 2 and Zwift?
