Mont Ventoux Freezing

Twice in two days, Zwift has frozen climbing Mt Ventoux. The first day, it said connection error, but the game itself froze. The second day, the game just stopped. Very annoying as on Day 1 I was 300 feet from the top

Can you say more about your PC, including which CPU and GPU you are using, how much memory it has, etc

Hi Paul- I use an inexpensive laptop-Intel pentium1.6 ghz, 4.0 gb ram, 64 bit windows.

It’s only frozen 3 times-twice on Ventoux and once on another climb portal. Thanks!

I think your laptop is being pushed beyond its capabilities.

You’re using a laptop that based on the processor is circa 20 years old. 4GB RAM is also only half what Zwift needs in reality.

Assuming you’ll be using the integrated GPU which again is well below the standard required.

I think it’s time to look for a newer setup or an alternative way of running Zwift.

If you don’t have or can’t afford anything better than that laptop, this is what I would do…

Assuming it has Intel integrated graphics, go to the Intel website and download the graphics driver from there. Don’t rely on the one provided by Microsoft.

Upgrade RAM to 8GB.

If the laptop has a mechanical hard drive you can also drastically improve its performance by replacing that with a solid state drive, and those have become very cheap in the last few years. I paid $19 for one recently.

Even with those upgrades Zwift performance won’t be great, but the video driver costs nothing to try, and the memory upgrade is usually inexpensive and easy to install (depends on how much work it is to access the memory slots in the motherboard). You can usually find a YouTube video that demonstrates how to do it in your make/model of laptop.

Thanks for the input. I am sure you are correct, however the game runs fine everywhere else. It sometimes gets stressed during events with large fields-like the tour of Watopia-where it won’t show all th riders. It’s just strange to have it freeze when I am solo on Ventoux. I’ll try a ram upgrade. I need it for another 4 weeks before I head to Costa Rica for La Ruta de los conquistadores :melting_face:

Freezing, crashing, and weird graphical glitches are common on machines with Intel integrated graphics, and using the absolute latest driver from Intel often resolves that. Not every area in the game has the same demands for CPU and GPU performance.

If you want to get something that is simple, you can try Apple TV and connect that to a TV screen via HDMI cable. That will have minimum setup demands. It won’t look great (probably same as what you have) but it should work without drama ahead of your event which is not far away.

That’s assuming updating the drivers on your system doesn’t sort out what’s happening. Upgrading the SSD is worth trying, that will certainly improve the speed of the machine in some areas.
