Kickr Bike Experience - it broke

Will do Mark. I did hear from Wahoo Customer Support after I tweeted them and told them I will pay the $1500.00! I feel like I’m paying ransom money, lol :joy:! We’ll see when it finally gets here. It’s so sad because my husband and I were doing a fundraiser for ACS this month and he hasn’t reached his 300 miles yet and the month is almost over! We can’t ride outside because of snow. Hopefully we can ride out there this weekend. We have a lot of miles to make up!
Paul- I was loving the bike until it lost power for no reason. I’ll see how this 2nd bike performs.

I’ve used it everyday this year

Had a power issue in the first week and had a new power brick delivered, it’s been ok since then.

Loose handle bars, I’ve had this issue. I noticed on the installation video the quick release is on the other side. I switched around and it’s been solid since. Had issue with seat post slipping a bit too, stuck a small piece of paper in there it’s been fine since.

No issues with shifters and no issues with creaking even though a ride with it on a rocker plate.

Handlebars are a bit thin vs my Canyon Endurance road bike. Maybe that’s a tape thing ?

Still think it’s amazing after putting 20k into a TACX NEO 1.

I’m so mad right now .

The replacement bike was supposed to come today and I waited around for it in case they needed a signature. What came was the empty box to put the old bike pieces in :rage:. And we paid more money up front so we can get it faster! Not cool!!

Before the power brick not working, we had to replace the handlebar QR skewer as it just broke. 2 weeks later, the seat QR skewer also broke. Then we had no power to the machine. I asked about replacing just the power brick and they looked up the serial number and they said it’s irreparable and we need to just replace the bike. So it sounds like they’ve had issues with these bikes, ugh!

That would drive me crazy. Not only are you losing out of workout time but the 1500 down payment should have that bike to you immediately! Surely that the whole point in it.

Fortunately mine’s been ok, good luck.

I know. It’s hard to be patient when I have work to do! I was doing so good before and was on a roll. I have to start over now and build it up again. I’m so glad yours is still working great! I think I may have received something not as great for the same high price because as soon as they knew my serial number, they just said it had to be replaced :frowning:. Enjoy riding!!

I’ve had my Kickr Bike since July 2020 and so far, not 1 issue - it has been a solid racehorse since day 1.
Guess I bought mine at the right time in production?

Thought i’d put an update because Wahoo have come good, eventually!

Shifters had stopped working on the 18th Feb, contacted Wahoo, needed new handlebars but they had none in stock! Finally arrived on the 25th March, shifters worked fine but had the same QR issue that many on here have had. Ben from Wahoo gave me a fix that meant tightening the QR clamp on an empty tube and leaving overnight - it worked.

I now have a working Wahoo Kickr Bike again and still loving it! Here’s hoping this stays in good shape for a long time this time!

Having no shifters forced me to do some an ERG plan so chose Bulid Me Up - great plan but had the same issues as lots of other people on here, losing data and rides.

Okay - back on the working bike

Well, just to update you guys, I still have not received the bike yet. It has been 12 days since I reported it not working. They say it might come on Thursday. Apr. 1st- we’ll see. I have received the 2 empty boxes to return the old bike! In hindsight, I would say do NOT give them the extra $1,500.00! I was misled in thinking I could get the bike sooner if I did that! I sure better get that deposit back or there will be a lot more noise coming from me and I would urge Zwift to reconsider recommending the Wahoo bike! Thank you for all your feedback! I did love the bike when it worked and have missed Zwift so much and all my conditioning :grinning::joy:!

My Kickr Bike has just done the same thing today without warning. The power brick started flashing dull green and the bike would do nothing, no gear indications and terrible rough pedalling. When you unplug the cable from the bike the brick then lights up normally.

I’m going back through the local bike shop to see about getting it replaced. I’m not paying $1500 extra however.

I probably did about 4 weeks of riding on the bike.

I’m disappointed because it was such a great unit while it worked.

I will add my update, mine will be replaced. Seems it is a known fault. Two boxes will be arriving to my bike shop along with the new bike. I provided a video of the behaviour and gave them the serial number. That was enough.

That’s awful, Chris, that you’ve only ridden it a month and now it’s not working??! There was a thread that I read somewhere that talked about unplugging the bike when not in use. I didn’t know about that, but we were using the bike everyday, or every other day so I didn’t think I needed to unplug it each time. But maybe that will help prolong the life of the power brick? Let me know how soon you get your replacement bike! I sure hope the one I get will last longer!

From what I’m led to believe the problem isn’t the power brick in this case but something inside the bike.

I’m doing about 450km/week on the bike so I’m putting it to best use.

So far I’m happy with the resolution process.

Dominique, the issues with Quick Release are solved very easily by “lubricating” the seat post and handlebar post with assembly paste. I use Park Tool " SuperGrip Carbon and Alloy Assembly Compound", which costs in the ballpark of $12 per tube. It feels like lubricant with fine grain in it and acts as sand paper, of sorts… totally prevents sliding… once you put it on the posts, you will no longer need to tighten your QR significantly. Finger-tight will be good enough. Nothing will ever slide. Actually, many cyclists do the same thing on their bikes.

Paul, thank you so much for posting the pictures! I find it fascinating to find out what is inside of the Kickr Bike. Do you by any chance have more pictures to share? I am struggling to figure out where the parts which you captured in your pictures are located. I understand they are somewhere within that big black box behind bottom bracket, but where?

Hi Andrei - i don’t have any more pics - it is the area on the left side of the bike, at the bottom of the bike, directly behind the actuator that connects to the floor frame. If you can look up from the floor, you’ll see an exhaust grate that blows warm air out when the bike is in operation. This exhaust opening is directly below where the coils are located.

Paul

Actually it’s pretty good on the seatpost but it is not always a solution for the handlebars. Don’t know why it’s different but in my case, the stem still slips with the paste AND the QR tightened down to within an inch of its life. I’m looking into other solutions like better clamps.

Film at eleven.

Mark - try this, it worked for me

    1. Unplug your shifter cables and remove your handle bars completely.
    1. Apply lubricating silicone spray between the collar and headtube.
    1. Wipe away any grease or silicone spray from inside head tube.
    1. Open the lever on the quick release skewer and tighten the nut until the axle is flush with the end of the nut.
    1. Ensure the quick release cam surface is inline with the bushing and close the quick release lever. This will take some pressure to close.
    1. Keep the quick release lever closed Overnight.
    1. Next day: Open the quick release lever and unscrew the nut 1/2 to 1 full turn.
    1. Reinsert the steerer tube, set to desired height. Ensure the quick release cam surface is inline with the bushing and close the quick release lever.

Well after 2 weeks I got the replacement bike and on the 3rd week I received a refund of the $1,500,00 deposit. All fine, now if only we can figure out why the replacement bike is making such a loud noise when I’m pedaling. I never noticed it before from the first bike. Already called Wahoo again and they want us to take a video and send to them. Hopefully there’s an easy fix.

Fingers crossed it keeps going.

Mine is at the bike shop. Allegedly parts are going to be sent and a fix will be attempted.

I’m using a Tacx neo 2T for now. It is quite good so far.

Fingers crossed, Chris! I may have to buy a back up trainer for next winter season just in case :joy:. I love the concept of the Wahoo bike for sure and I hope they can figure out all the glitches and problems with it. For now, the weather is getting nicer and it’s wonderful to ride outside! Though with CO weather it’s changing again and back to Zwifting some more and work on getting that Tron bike :joy:!
