iPad Pro screen dims

iPad Pro 12.9 inch
M4 processor
iPadOS 18.0

I had been waiting to use the iPad Pro with Zwift until ultra resolution capability is added, but decided to try it out.

The screen dims just shy of every 5 minutes, but the tablet doesn’t enter sleep mode, It clears after tapping anywhere on the screen.

Auto-lock is set for 2 minutes. This occurs with normal Zwift rides, as well as watching another rider. I only transiently glance at objects other than the tablet screen during a normal ride, but made sure to keep my eyes on the screen continuously while watching another rider, without any impact. This hasn’t occurred with any other apps thus far. I had already upgraded iPadOS from 17.x to iPadOS 18.0 prior to running Zwift for the first time, so don’t know whether that is related.

Thanks

I changed Auto-lock to “never” prior to loading Zwift for my morning ride today, and that had no impact on the screen dimming that occurs at slightly less than 5 minute intervals

Bump. Experiencing the same issue. I have the same iPad setup.

Bump. Same issue with the same iPad setup.

Same for me on ipad.

Sounds like the iPad went into low power mode, which could happen if it’s not connected to a charger or the charger is a weak 1 amp phone charger. What are you using to supply power to the tablet while riding?

iPad is fully charged but not plugged into power. If it was power, then this would happen at a set interval. Usually it happens once in the first 5 minutes and then not again when woken up. It doesn’t happen that we have noticed iwth other apps so it seems to be something to do with Zwift.

I would try it plugged in to power and see if that makes a difference. If the battery is unable to provide enough voltage that can cause a problem even if battery level is not low. Use a 2 amp or better charger, not one of those wimpy 1 amp phone chargers. I do not know if this will help but it is possible that it can. If this were a general problem I think there would be a lot of screaming going on because there are so many iPad users.

This might be due to the settings of Face ID. I did some digging and found a thread on the apple forum:

Presumably you have an iPad Pro with FaceID. Try disabling the Attention Aware feature…

Settings > FaceID & Passcode > Attention-Aware Features - set to OFF

When set to ON - the iPad will automatically dim the display when you are not actively looking directly at the screen - the timeout period being determined by the Auto-Lock setting (Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto Lock).

Thanks -

I hadn’t used the iPad Pro with Zwift for a while. Used it today, planning to see if that setting made a difference after the first instance of screen dimming.

However, it didn’t dim today at any point during the ride. The Stages SC3 has a Stages front tablet mount, the cockpit adjustments are unchanged, so the face to tablet distance is unchanged, I primarily look at the screen, no different than before.

The difference may be due to changes made to the current iPad OS version. I’ll try that setting if the dimming recurs, as Attention Aware Features was on.

The iPad Pro is always connected to the charger for Zwift rides.
