Game Update v 1.80 [December 2024]

Yes, as the text that you quoted says. I’m a fan of the dynamic pace partners but this is just something broken in PD5, which for whatever reason ZHQ refuses to say anything about other than occasionally acknowledging it exists

that just makes no sense… when you increase your power you are getting dropped?

There are certainly issues with PD5 but I haven’t experienced this one yet.

I’m not sure what’s so confusing to you about this. Are you new here? When PD4 came out you could get dropped off the back of the Coco group doing 5.0.

More PD5 weirdness, here we have the entire pace partner group hugging the left side of the lane for some reason, no one in the right and it’s a longer path. A few seconds after this screenshot was taken the group fractured into three separated and distinct blobs.

yup, total noob

Merry Christmas!

Sorry, confusing for me, too. With 2.9 W/kg (or less) way way ahead and 2.9 or more dropped?!?

Yes, because PD5 is broken, blobs are not functioning properly and weird things are happening that shouldn’t be.

Are you expecting me to come in and post “everything is working as expected” in a bug report / QA thread?

As all over the place that PD5 seems to be, why not. It makes perfect sense, just as long as you don’t think about it.

I think people are picturing you happily riding along out front at 2.9 and then when you increase your power you start shooting backwards and off the back.

We had some funny instances in my ride yesterday when I was sharing photos; where the sprinters were left completely to their own devices on the far left side where the blob kept to the right.

I thought I started to make some sense of it, but then it would remind me that even it doesn’t seem to follow what rules I think it has.

Like the instances it spat me out of our blob, not by a little bit, but by an entire car width, away from everyone… at a random instance. I made a comment about it, and some others said the same happened to them a lap or two prior… with no meaningful reason.

I started to think that if a group had a higher average power, they would go to one side (preferably the left), and a right side group would form.

But that thought didn’t last very long.

It’s a funny statement though because it’s true; you can literally sit side by side with someone, or a group, and with PD5 now, you might end up in a group, or spat out solo.

You can literally drop, or be dropped… but never changing power.

Just because PD5 is doing whatever it wants.

I rode the Power to the Tower yesterday, and for a good portion, I was right on the centerline.
Occasionally, someone would pass me on the right, and when they were 3-4 seconds ahead of me ( according to the Riders Nearby list ), I’d abruptbly swing over to the right in their line. Obviously, I was too far behind them to get any real draft from them.

After updating to 1.80 on macOS I have ridden in a ZMonthly series race yesterday without any issues. Today I wanted to join a robo pacer and after the world was loaded this is what I saw:

I have tried another pacer with the same effect. Using teleport also doesn’t fix the issue.

That … is a very dying graphics card, or somehow a very bad driver, being a mac I struggle to believe it has a bad driver but it is possible.

Although now makes me curious how the map display works since I guess it isn’t a 3D element at all, but more like how SNES worked.

Anyways; nothing Zwift can do for you, either your GPU is dying, or it was fed a bad driver.
Generally when a GPU dies, the 3D capability of it is the first to go (and what you’ve pictured is what it looks like; where vertices calculations are total fails), and 2D element capability sticks around until total failure.

Killing a GPU is… rare though; I’ve only managed to do it once in my life.

Hope you have Apple care or some warranty still; there’s no way that new of a computer should be having this issue; potentially from overheating? (don’t get a laptop if you don’t need one, heat is what kills them, and also what they’re the worst at.)

Once I restarted Zwift everything was again normal. I didn’t have such odd issue yet.

There have been problems like yours in the past. I used to see it occasionally in Makuri with a 2017 MacBook Pro, but it was resolved in a game update and I haven’t heard anything like that recently. It was not a hardware or driver issue, but if you are offered a macOS update on that machine I would take it since that would possibly change the video driver.

That’s absolutely wild to me then!
That is all the signs of a GPU miscalculating though.

Here are some examples like what I experienced, but all of that was a couple years ago IIRC

How can you be ahead doing less than 2.9 and get dropped doing more than 2.9?

Anyhow, it’s needed for racing so….

For what it’s worth I did a ride for over an hour with the fast Constance group and stayed with them at less watts/kg than 4.2. I did get randomly shoved out of the draft and also blocked and slowed down by slower riders ahead when I was trying to stay with the robopacer.

My control with steering was very limited - Zwift was guiding my avatar like a heat seeking missile towards any other rider ahead of me - quite abruptly. I had to repeatedly hold down the steering button to stop that otherwise I’d lose the robopacer and a small group of three would get away by about 2 seconds. I’m not losing power so hopefully the snarky folks won’t come along and suggest “ride with slower group”.

I know it’s needed for racing and we have to take our medicine and deal with it, but this seems broken to me. It seems like a start from scratch is needed.

What could solve this “needed for racing” is to give racing its own pack behaviour with very heavy autobraking and blocking for groups and a big aero benefit for solo riders on their own. That should address the years old wishes for the racers or perhaps I’m being a bit cynical there.

I don’t know why you keep saying that. It’s bad for everything. Non-steering riders do need better auto-steering behavior so races don’t become completely pay-to-play but the changes that have been made are just bad, period.

Because some of the racers are particularly vocal about wanting convoluted pack dynamics adjustments which have brought us to this point over a period of multiple years.

There was one such reply five days ago I. This very topic.
