Can you clarify the minimum requirements? Does the 8GB RAM requirement mean 8GB available to Windows or 8GB installed memory? I have seen some of these 8GB AMD laptops with integrated graphics that have as little as ~6GB available to Windows. If your intent is to require 8GB available to Windows then I think you need to note that in the document because people assume their device meets the spec based on the current language. Many of them have no awareness of how much memory is used by the GPU and will have to be instructed how to find out. The game could also tell them that.
Annual subscription here too. What a disappointment. Zwifting for years comes to an abrupt end overnight. Customer service/ambassadors had me jumping through all kinds of hoops for days! I spent hours deleting and re installing versions. Mostly the ambassadors because customer service wont engage with me because the problem ticket doesn’t get escalated. Come to find out its a known problem with long discussion threads. I gather by reading this thread that problem is not getting fixed. What a disappointment mixed with a big dose of frustration.
Same here, integrated AMD GPU on my laptop has been running Zwift for 2 or 3 years at a reasonable FPS with absolutely no problems (huge, mass events + dust sections etc. just fine) and now typically freezes after 30 minutes or so, drivers fully updated not helping…
Have been happily using Zwift only since 2016 but currently giving MyWhoosh a go as a result
I am still having trouble with Zwift. Now with V 1.79 it reliably crashes after 1.5hours.
With V1.78 it crashed after 2-2.5 hours.
Here is my PC in detail:
Lenovo ThinkCentre M75q Gen 2 11JJ - Mini - Ryzen 3 Pro 4350GE
OS: Windows 11 Pro (latest Version 24H2)
CPU: AMD Ryzen 3 Pro 4350GE / 3.5 GHz (at least better than Minimum)
RAM: 16GB Memory (double Minimum)
GPU: integrated Radeon Vega 6 (About 3x faster than AMDR5 over all)
HD: 256GB SSD (15% full) (way over Minimum)
BT: Bluetooth V5.0 (better than required)
About my PC detailed above:
It runs Zwift absolutely smooth even in 4K, but I use 1080P because Monitor only has that much.
When it crashes it seems to be out of blue sky, there are no hints that is getting into trouble.
What I observed it that is continuously builds up RAM usage slowly more and more and then
Zwift freezes at about 6-8GB….
Then usually the AMD bug report tool recovers everything and I report Zwift to them.
There is no difference if I run my PC naked just Zwift, or fully blown watching films or TV over a browser, Listening to music and/or running discord.
Also no difference when Onedrive is on or off.
The PC has been freshly installed (totally) .
The Video capture is not offered in options menu anyway.
The Graphics drivers are either latest AMD or Windows default (no huge diffence in freezing)
The PC easily passes multiple different benchmarks and/or stresstests.
I tried other “voodoo” as well but there is no difference whatever I tried.
It ran perfectly without the slightest hiccup until 1.78 (or the version previous 1.77.1??).
another observation:
Funny enough I tried using a Tablet that is definatly BELOW minimum requirement:
Surface Tablet Pro 3 from 2014. I have had that for 10 years, even had to repair it once,
It is actually a piece of junk… BUT I manages to run me through 3+ hour rides. The
Screen freezes now and then but it recovers. That shows actually good stability.
Here Zwift only uses between 500MB and 1,5GB of Memory (4GB memory installed).
I do not want to have to run that small quirky tablet on the small screen, and I actually do NOT
want to buy a new PC because actually the one I have should be OKAY.
Please try to solve this issue. Riding/training is hard enough and when Zwift plays up I doesn’t really help at all.
Just another hint that I am not “Unexperienced” with Zwift:
I am a Level 100 rider and have done about 65000km over the past 4 years. all on the PC described above. There was NO problem whatsoever with it eventhough I didn´t handle it like a raw egg as I am now.
Does the 8GB RAM requirement mean 8GB available to Windows or 8GB installed memory?
Thank you for asking @Paul_Southworth . The minimum requirement is just 8GB of installed RAM. Results may vary with how much is available to Zwift at a given time, especially as other apps running in the background may get memory-hungry. In general, Zwift should be able to run on any PC that meets min specs with default configuration settings.
Some insight on this Issue, I ran a log on my new laptop and the memory leak is in VRAM not RAM. this is with a RX770S and latest drivers. On watopia I leaked around 2.5 GB in around 50 minutes and in scotland I leaked around 1.3 GB in 45 minutes. there was no noticible leak in ram or the integrated gpu (muxless laptop).
Edit: this roughly alligns with my old laptop that had 4GB on the discrete gpu and would crash after around 30-40 mins with an older driver (gpu no longer supported)
Upgraded my Ryzen laptop with integrated graphics to 16 GB ram, and get a longer runtime now.
I also did some testing, monitoring the “shared graphics memory usage” in GB over time:
Resolution - 576p- 1080p
5 min -------- 0,3 - 0,3
30 min ------ 1,2 - 1,3
60 min ------ 1,7 - 2,6
90 min ------ 2,2 - 3,7
120 min ---- 2,5 - 5,4
150 min ---- 3,0 - 6,6
180 min ---- 4,2 - crash
210 min ---- 5,9
240 min ---- crash
So it seems for whatever reason the graphics memory just fills up until the app crashes.
If you are willing to sacrifice some graphics quality you should get longer rides done.
Still a pain in the a**, as I consider ZWIFTS graphic nice and appropriate, but still a far shot from being high end.
Also, does someone know how to manually tweak the graphics?
I don’t know if this will help but you may find some possibilities. You should be on the Basic profile.
You could also investigate whether any of the Radeon settings affect the game. I have no idea.
Thank you Paul, the config tweaks look super helpful.
exactly the same for me
exactly the same for me. i’m in touch with zwift support so will post here if they come up with anything useful - would you mind doing the same please?
So I now had direct reply by not one but three Zwift support people.
The first was that my Bike (Zwift Ride) controllers were having trouble with Bluetooth.
So I deactivated the onboard BT in Bios and am using a BT dongle. That helped twice on a Tuesday and Wednesday (little populated world) but now crashes again…
The second “help” was that I should check BT and Wlan and interference occuring. I already did that a while ago for no special reason. The guy at zwiftalyser talked about it and I looked if there was anything. Overall I NEVER have any trouble with ANY wireless connections at home. And my 10year old Tablet (below specifications) can carry me through a 3h ride. But the new PC doesnt ?!?
The third help was to reinstall Zwift. So I did that too. Crashed after 2,5h so no change. I stated that I had completly set up the PC fresh. Clean install of Windows and everything. Set up the BIOS to default… to name it: handle the PC like a raw egg… but there was no change at any point…
Want i can state that works 100% reliable: Zwift freezes on me after 2 to 2.5hours. That is for sure. I sometimes am “shocked” when it passes the 2h:30min marker.
So everytime I go for my rides (3+hours) Zwift passes away, AMD crash report tool recovers everything. I report to AMD and restart Zwift for the next ride. Really “nice”.
Havent had the slightest hiccup before (since may 8,2020) when I started Zwift. Now after a lot of playing around this seems to be the new “normal”…
All these responses and suggestions you’ve had are really a waste of time. See my response here from Zwift. They are fully aware of the issue, but aren’t publicly acknowledging it. I have asked them to share a proactive update and have sent them a link to this forum thread so they can see how many people are experiencing the issue. I will share any further updates I get.
To be clear, when I “just ride” I don’t experience issues. However, if I try to use a workout (which is all I really do) it crashes every time. And like you Edi, I had zero issues before about weeks ago. Two years of uninterrupted and problem free use - now EVERY workout fails. This is 100% a Zwift issue, this is nothing to do with user error - our home wifi, our laptops etc.
Hi folks, just to confirm, we are actively investigating this issue as was mentioned earlier in the thread. This is a high priority for us and we’ll post additional updates here as soon as we have more to share.
Thanks Evan. Apologies I missed the earlier post from you guys - I haven’t scrolled all the way to the top. We’re all eyes and ears for the next update
Usually however, they first acknowledge that there is an issue. That prior acknowledgement was IMO worded along the lines that that trying to confirm that there is a problem, and the suggestion was that many reports were from sub-standard systems (which may be true, and hopefully Zwift is telling those folks that that’s their problem and what it is). I don’t know what could/would have been substandard. Ryzen is ok, so that leaves less than 8gb ram, or something else?
I’ve spoken to many riders who found out due to this issue that 4GB RAM is not enough. They were OK before the update that broke it, but below the recommended amount. Many of them are OK now after memory upgrades, but I don’t know the other details about their configuration or workout duration. It may be buying them enough time to get through what they want to do. A rider who wants to ride for 30 min might be OK with 12GB.
Thanks, I was waiting for something like this. Just that I know I can stop playing around with one configuration of my hardware after another. I will revert everything to how it once worked. All I will leave “as is” now, is that I do all connections either via Network or companion app.
For no special reason (as I made no changes from monday to tuesday) Zwift crashed on monday but let me ride for more than 3hours on tuesday (yesterday) … I was shocked
About RAM I have observed Zwift crashing at all sorts of RAM loads (2-6GB). Using an old Surface Tablet with just 4GB of RAM it wasn´t a good sight and framerate but it let me ride for my 3+Hours… could be that higher RAM on Ryzen just extends “life” a little.
Hi folks, we’re going to keep sharing incremental updates along the way given the importance of this issue, but note that as a result, not all updates will be consequential. (If these incremental updates aren’t useful, please let me know.)
We’re still actively investigating the issue and have been able to intermittently reproduce the issue internally on some of our test devices with integrated AMD GPUs, which is helpful progress for our investigation. We’re currently in early testing of some potential fixes for the issue and we’ll share back on how those tests turn out as soon as possible.
Thanks Evan,
In case you want someone for long rides 3+hours to “test” something dont hesitate to ask me.
