ERG Mode

Robert, that’s how I had always done it until that last update.  Now the only way to accurately control the wattage w the Kickr app is to shut down Zwift, otherwise it’s all over the place.

I’m having the same, more basic issue as Tracie Sachs, which is even when using only the Zwift application to control my SNAP, the power fluctuations when doing a workout in ERG mode are severe.  Mine are even more severe than what Tracie describes.  It just about makes the Zwift workouts in ERG mode useless.

Prior to the volcano update, and the Kickr Snap firmware update which happened about the same time, I didn’t have this issue.  Power/resistance during ERG mode workouts was very steady.  Now it jumps all over the place, one second to the next.

I sure hope these issues get worked out.  I use Zwift almost exclusively to do programmed workouts, and found this more effective when the ERG mode functioned correctly.

Well, it looks like my own issues with Zwift / ERG are not just my own. I’ve been using Zwift + Kickr in ERG mode for workouts for a year, and it was working fine. Though I was a away for a couple of weeks (and didn’t ride), somewhere recently (the Volcano update?) the ERG mode stopped working.

And I’ve even got it bare-bones: ANT+ FE-C configured as both the power source and the control for the Kickr, with my power meter (Quarq) ANT+ as the cadence.

What I’m seeing is that Zwift isn’t controlling resistance well - or at all. When the workout goes from, say, 150w to 200w, no resistance is added to the Kickr. I can pedal faster, but I end up in 52x10 pedaling nearly 100rpm to reach the target.

Clearly something went backward in the connection between the two. I’m sticking with TrainerRoad for workouts for the time being (which works rock-solid). I’ll do Zwift when I’m not doing programmed workouts.

I hope this gets fixed; I had actually dropped my TR subscription, but renewed it in order to work out successfully, and I really don’t want to have two subscriptions.

I’ve been requesting a manual ERG mode that can be toggled on the fly since the original beta.  Being able to run the WF phone app to accomplish this was great until the “feature” got removed.  Especially on long rides, it is really nice to be able to toggle into ERG mode and zone out for awhile, and re-engage again.  Or if you want to throw a couple of specific intervals into a non workout ride.

There have definitely been some problems along the way where the Kickr would get confused since both Zwift and the WF app were sending it controlling commands, but these never seemed too significant.  I suspect fixing this is what broke our loved ERG feature.

You can fairly easily work around this by hitting the “A” key to enter the pairing screen and just unselect the controlable trainer while leaving the power source the same.  But it does briefly pause you, so definitely not a good solution for a group ride.  Plus, when going back to SIM mode by reconnecting the trainer, you have to be careful about the sequence of closing down the WF app so it doesn’t continue to compete for control.
