Per title - ERG mode often wont kick back in even after prolonged periods of pedaling after pause. Recent attempts at even restarting workouts result in no ERG mode being able to be engaged at all
You’ll need to post a lot more details of your exact setup if you want to get any constructive help.
Hi @Evan_Weiss
Welcome to Zwift. This is Haziel from Zwift. I appreciate that you share your concern about the ERG mode, which won’t kick back after a pause, even after pedaling.
Please note that when you pause or stop pedaling during a workout, Zwift assumes you’re struggling with the interval and automatically switches your trainer into Bailout mode. That puts you at a neutral resistance level. ERG mode won’t re‑engage until you hold the target power steadily for 5–10 seconds, or until the interval ends. If you just spin lightly, ERG won’t kick back in.
For more advice, please check this article ERG Mode Troubleshooting, which covers some of the troubleshooting steps to fix this.

Adding that to your documentation would be a blessing for users
ERG Mode will set an updated parameter if the target power changes. You can use the “Percentage” workout arrows to trigger this to occur during a workout segment if you don’t want to end the segment, if toggling ERG Mode in the ZwiftApp toolbar isn’t sufficient for it.
Example, if your workout target is 125W and you pause for a bit, it drops that resistance, start pedaling and click up or down on the arrows to set the workout target power higher or lower (126W or 124W or whatever that number changes to), that will send a new parameter to your trainer - the same effect as if it is a new workout block.
The big issue which bites me on workouts in ERG Mode is when doing a Group Workout, the trainer goes to “sleep” if I join with a lot of time left in the pens. I have to either toggle ERG Mode once I start pedaling out of the pens, or adjust the “scaling” for the workout intensity percentage to send a new target power value so that the trainer picks up that it needs to be in ERG Mode, because a “resume” in Zwift doesn’t trigger the parameter to be reset in the trainer. It’s initially set for the block, which is why this manifests as something annoying. If the time interval expires (trainer sleeps, you stop pedaling for a while, etc), then this usability issue manifests.
