Coffee break made me stop

Hi,

today I lost my group during a ride because the coffee break made me stop. Didn’t notice it until I got back from upstairs after getting new drinks.

Another coffee break later on also behaved strange: speed was jumpy.

Ride on.

Sounds great to me, the more problems with it the better it might stop people from hitting it every 30 minutes on the dot. Maybe Zwift should just take it out to 60 minutes, problem solved. Not sure about your bike but mine has TWO bottle holders, no need to get off the bike for hours.

You may have a misunderstanding of how coffee stops work, that’s understandable as Zwift doesn’t really explain it well either.

It’s similar to the rubber band, in that your speed will depend on which rider Zwift has associated you with. Just like the rubber band, if that associated rider stops, so do you. However, with the coffee stop, if that other rider starts again, you will be left sitting by the wayside. Similarly, your speed isn’t constant, it’s that of that other rider. In a free ride, you may also come to a stop if that associated rider does a U-turn, but I think here you are talking about a group ride.

Basically, yes, you can come back from getting your drinks and find you have stopped and are alone. That’s simply how it is and the chance you have to take.

It’s hard to guess the reason if you weren’t there to see the circumstances. For example if you ended up with a single rider and they stopped or quit, it would be normal for you to stop as well.

There are also specific spots where you might get unintentionally droped while using coffee stop. On the Two Village Loop route in Makuri Islands there is a “viewpoint” at a lake where the camera zooms out and in again, like at the top of AdZ and on some other specific spots. I noticed in a group ride that this animation seems to interrupt the coffee stop so we droped a rider there who was using coffee stop at the time we passed that viewpoint. I reported that to Zwift but I don’t know if this has already been fixed.

Have to say I did lol at the coffee break made me stop remark. Would it be possible to have more fluids available near enough to your ride position so that you don’t need to use it?

I use the coffee stops to make minor adjusts, like turning on a fan or grabbing a drink from the small refrigerator behind my bicycle. I don’t think they are for spending three minutes off the bicycle every 30 minutes. I often only need 15 seconds. Occasionally a quick bathroom break, which makes the feature a benefit.

LOL. That pretty unlikely!
