I use it for heartrate monitoring. It’s disappeared from my watch with the latest update and no longer appears on the list on the Watch app on my phone. IOS 15.6.1.
I don’t know what just changed but I think they dropped support for the Apple Watch last year. You probably need a different heart rate monitor.
I can’t find any mention of that, have you got a link? Their support pages still talk about using an apple watch and even talked about how they improved HR support for the watch last year.
I think it’s still possible to use it as HRM if you do the proper dance, but frustrations abound. They gave up on dedicated apps for the watch as far as I know.
Hey thanks for that. Disappointing but they’re right that the apple watch app could be less than reliable. Ordered a HR monitor.
After latest Companion update, related app was removed from Apple Watch 3 and cannot be reinstalled.
Anybody facing the same issue?
I’m not an apple man but i know the latest version needs iOS 13 as minimum. Is it the case your phone that’s linked to your watch is older?
No, I have iOS 15.6 and Watch OS 8.
Very disappointing as I too use it for HR monitoring.
Whilst this doesn’t help you, we haven’t supported Apple Watch for HR for about the last 12 months.
Yes, I remember the bulletin some time ago last year. Despite of it, it always worked (not at first time, requiring 2-3 re-pair after connection loss). Wondering why is no longer listed in the available apps even if Companion on App Store compatibility statement for Apple Watch is still there .
Thanks for the feedback.
Solution/workaround:
As others have found, my Apple Watch Series 1 (maxed out on OS 6.3) is unsupported and the app was automatically deleted from my watch. I installed HeartCast (iPhone and Watch apps) and it worked fine as a replacement on my first ride… like Zwift used to do with the watch and the companion app, the watch sends the HR data to the iPhone for re-transmission as a BT HR monitor. I hope this helps people that Zwift abandoned with this update.
Ironically, HeartCast was developed by a Peloton user HeartCast is free and has a $1.99 in-app purchase to “pro” but am not sure what limitations the free app has at this point (I used it for an hour+ ride).
When I had issues in the past, I tried BlueHeart (it worked sporadically with RGT and Zwift) and there is also a $20 “ECHO” app that I have never tried.

Why not though? I had a good set up with companion, my iPhone, watch, and was using Appletv to put Zwift on the big screen. Worked great and now it doesn’t. Why would Zwift take away functionality? I don’t want to purchase an HR monitor, my Apple Watch works fine.
I’ll try your heart cast work around tomorrow, hope it works. Pretty disappointed to find all this out this morning on my ride.
The recent change should have been communicated in advance to avoid a disappointing surprise. Unfortunately they gave up on the Apple Watch long ago and many people have had a frustrating experience using it, so I’m not surprised it was dropped completely, but we don’t even know if the change was intentional or not.
I had the same problem. The Zwift Companion app (blue icon) was suddenly deleted from my iWatch yesterday and I was no longer able to track and record my heart rate during the Zwift workout. (I use Zwift every day.) When I tried the iWatch Zwift app (red icon), it didn’t solve the problem (never paired to the iWatch “unpaired”). I then tried the HeartCast app, and it worked great. Problem solved!
Later today, I noticed that, with the HeartCast app, the Strava app (which I also use) frequently dropped some of the heart rate data leaving gaps in the plot and an incorrect average bpm. The iPhone Fitness app does not have this problem and the data look good, and the average also looks correct.
In later tests I found some inconsistencies in the behavior of the APP with Zwift. For example, when it worked best, I saw the heart rate displayed in real time on the Companion and Zwift APP and the HR data were downloaded to the Apple Fitness, Strava, and Zwift Companion APPs. I think I found the secret. It’s in the sequence of turning things on. What I found works was this: First, start the Zwift companion APP on the iPhone. Second, start the HeartCast APP in the iPhone and on the iWatch. Follow the instruction on the iPhone you are told to push “Start” on the iWatch when it comes up) and wait for the two APPs to pair. Once paired start the Zwift APP (on the iPad in my case) and pair to the smart trainer (in my case the Wahoo Kickr Snap). The Heart Rate should pair successfully after a few moments. If pairing is successful, “Workout” and “Bluetooth” on the iPhone HeartCast APP display will have green lettering.
FYI: My setup is this: iPad running the Zwift APP (a laptop should also work); iPhone running the HeartCast and Zwift Companion APPSs. For the smart trainer, I have a Wahoo Kickr Snap smart trainer.
It might not be supported but many people still used it. It wasn’t perfect in past but it was finally working perfectly for about two months and now you dropped option to use it on Apple Watch? Why did you remove support for Apple Watch Series 3 and older in companion app? What is the point? If you don’t want us to use Apple Watch at all at least work on Apple health app sync as it is terrible. Just bring back option to use companion app on Apple Watch… I just don’t get it, I don’t care if you officially support Apple Watch as HR or not just don’t kill option to use if it’s working. And one more thing why is zwift still supported on Apple Watch but companion is not? What is the point??
How about fixing the inabilty to connect to Apple Watch for heartbeat syncing?
My Garmin has started giving strange results so rather than replacing wanted to use Apple Watch - Heartcast seems to work for me - thanks for posting
