Hi, I was curious about the status of the fence being released? Originally it sounded like it was going to be back in use by the end of March but no sign of it? Really miss it on the large group rides, the dynamic on those rides has changed completely. Thanks
The fixes we put in place did not result in the improvements we had hoped for, so the fence remains disabled for rides. We’re still working on it.
Thanks for the update Wes. My experience with the fence coincides with all of my buddies. We never got tossed if we stayed behind the fence. The thing we learned early on was that if you did go through the fence and then drifted back through with a group of riders sometimes you had to get a few seconds behind the fence before the system picked you out and realized you were back behind the fence. That seemed logical, no idea how the system manages to identify invidual riders in a bunch drifting backwards. I got tossed that way 2 or 3 times but after that I never let it happen again. And I knew I deserved to get tossed for being past the fence. So I’ll be honest, we all felt the fence worked just fine and made social rides social rides, not races which is what they were before the fence and now have become again. Racing is fine but it’s nice when you don’t feel like racing to be able to participate in a true social ride controlled by the leader. I think the social ride leaders hate the fence being gone. Sure you can join a social ride and just stick with the leader but when you are a racer at heart you always feel compelled to chase down whoever is in front of you. That was the beauty of the fence, you could ride in a large group ride and enjoy it knowing a 2.2 to 2.4 ride wasn’t going to turn into a 3.7 to 4.0 ride the whole way. I do really feel sorry for the leaders. Anyway, thanks for listening, I do love Zwift, just disappointed that the fence isn’t back yet. I’d have just left the old one in place until the new one was ready… Best, Mike
It’s well established that there were issues with the fence booting people no where near the fence. It didn’t affect the majority of users but it really badly affected those that it affected.
The latest zwiftcast had an interesting point (from Simon). He believed that some groups and leaders were doing a better job now of letting the break go and settling into the right speed. He seemed to suggest the fence and then the loss of the fence has matured some groups. I found it an interesting point. I’m looking forward to the fence returning nevertheless.
Be back Zoon? We are seriously considering reducing leader lead rides, silver lining… can only see100 rendered riders?
seems like you are flogging a dead horse trying to fix the fence.
Just cut the draft effect infront of the leader, no one gets booted, no blobs can form infront of the leader, and no one can ride off the front (unless very determind)
Yep, looking forward to seeing the fence return. Most chat in group rides now consists of constantly telling flyers to stick near the leader. Incredibly you usually get 10-20% who ignore the instructions
Hi Ben,
that is interesting. To be honest I’m not sure we really need the fence anymore.
(That would make Zwift’s job easier). Yes the group splits up, but there always seems to be someone to ride with.
I think the real point is, that the leader sticks to the suggested intensity so that there is a main group at the suggested effort.
It’s good to see that the main group is not so worried about the fliers at present. Who cares if they go up the road?
I did the Herd social 100Km plus endurance ride last Sunday and finished with the yellow beacon in just under 5 hours. av 1.7W/Kg
The “results” show that the leaders were 1 hour 50 min ahead… what’s the point of going off the front of a D paced social ride?
Hi Steve,
I know what you are saying but does it really matter?
I don’t mind the fence, but I really haven’t missed it.
I am actually starting to think that the present system is in many ways more sociable. I know that sounds strange but you get a good turn out of Zwifters and they ride as they feel, making natural groups as they go.
As long as you ignore the flyers and are in a group at a effort you are happy with, happy days. In many ways its more relaxed, more enjoyable.
Just a thought. . . . .
