Stages SB20- Steering and Gear Display

Another vote for a gear display similar to what Zwift has for Wattbike!

It’s an absolute must…
This is quickly becoming a very popular bike, don’t understand why it won’t be prioritised.

From a post by James (one of the leads at Stages on the SB20) on the SB20 FB group - this licence was obtained by Stages - but this was a couple of years ago now - and we still have nothing.

With the frequent beta updates on the Stages app and FW updates for the bike - its for sure Zwift that are holding this up…

A few people have now fitted the Stages Play device to their SB20 and it appears it works up to a fashion (needing to move the drop shift buttons for optimal fitting) - but at least we have something now.

I wonder if the official API will be released sooner rather than later for allow smart bike manufacturers to get button steering and aux buttons working…

Yes, when will steering finally be available for the Stages SB20 bike.

On the Facebook group it was mentioned that Stages already had a licence way back in March of 2021 and until today no steering supported :smiling_face_with_tear:

Zwift steering update

We have an agreement with Zwift to add StagesBike SB20 to the list of devices that can be used in steering events, however the update from Zwift was "Maybe April" for implementation. That is all I know at this point.

The Wahoo Kickr already has this support since January of 2021.

I remember well when James from Stages was active in the FB group with his frequent updates. Real shame nothing came from this and Stages have gone dark in terms of updates and Zwift integration.

Got to be honest thou, the new play controllers are good, once you move the drop blips out the way.

I’ve heard this has been in the works for awhile, any progress on seeing steering come to the stages sb20?

With steering implemented on Wahoo Kickr bikes, is there any hope that steering will be implemented on the SB 20?

Honestly steering on Kickr Bike has been super janky since the play controller came out. Bugs like ā€œsteering stops working and rider forced to the left when using a power upā€, or just bricking the bike so you need a full reset. It has worked on this latest update but it seems like as new features come out for the play it’s always going to be ā€œunsupported enhancementsā€.

A bigger priority for both bikes is to get them reading accurate power for more users. We’ve got some hilarious back and forth with wahoo about inaccurate devices. Every week or so we see a new person asking why SB20 gives them free watts.

Not sure where this belongs but I wondering now that Zwift has created hardware for steering and now virtual gearing which is displayed my question is simple. When will Zwift add support for STAGES BIKES to use the extra buttons for steering and support the display of virtual gearing. I am keenly interested in any answers you may provide

indieVelo has an awesome gear display for the SB20 - it will display the cog teeth numbers for both the selected front chain rings and rear cogs! Too cool!

Hi @shooji, hi @James_Zwift,
you may merge the two threads together? This one e.g. into this one: Gear display for Stages SB20
I highly appreciate you are fixing your code base in the recent releases; however I’d also appreciate to get the few smartbikes on the market fully supported by Zwift. Some are, but unfortunately not for the (I would guess) comparably high installed base of Stages SB20 owners.
Can you please share your ideas/roadmap-intentions with the community?

I just got an SB20 almost 2 weeks ago and would love to see the gear selection on the screen and be able to program the extra buttons on the shifters.

Does zwift not want to do this because they want you to buy their controllers? I rather not have to buy the play controllers when I have extra buttons available. Plus the controllers would require more bluetooth connections and I am using an apple tv that is currently using all 3 of its connections.

Couldn’t zwift just implement a button mapping feature like many games have?

Having the gear selection on screen would also eliminate an extra device I use just for monitoring this.

Yes you’re absolutely right, everyone was eagerly awaiting your newly enhanced addictive leveling up system with new bits and boobles at each new level. Everyone is also stoked about the increasing gamification of the platform to sell more controllers. Yes I could go on… You have forgotten something important along the way, the folks who signed up years ago to use your system as a serious platform for health and fitness, NOT TO PLAY GAMES. Maybe put some effort into properly supporting other vendors platforms, furthering your commitment to clubs ( access to 59 workouts, do better ). I could go on here also but I won’t, why BECAUSE THIS THREAD gets NO Zwift love. It would take one programmer 1 week max to make the SB20 buttons full functional so don’t talk about all the resources you can’t afford to designate to this effort. Just come clean and acknowledge that you want to kill the competition.

I am still hopeful they bring Zwift steering to the sb20. I don’t think this is a case of trying to kill off the competition. The sb20 is a smart bike, not a trainer and right now Zwift doesn’t have a smart bike available (though if I recall correctly they were working on one).

The whole situation is odd though. There was apparently an agreement between the 2 companies years ago and nothing materialized from it. About 6 months ago the Stages sb20 became harder to buy in some countries (it’s been reported to be unavailable in Canada).

Doug I’m in Canada and have purchased within last year. However I also had one previously. I don’t want to seem disagreeable, however the integration of additional functionality into the stages bike would not be rocket science at all. The community of SB20 owners Zwifting is not insignificant, however very few are vocal and accept the status quo. Zwift need to finish off some polishing and support before they continue with there rampant gamification of there product. And don’t get me started on there half attempt to bring clubs to Zwift. They have left that functionality also half baked. As a club owner I have a growing list, but one fight at a time . Thanks for chiming in! Much appreciated! Cheers

I’m glad you were able to pick one up! I just went to their site again and it’s still unavailable to purchase.

I’m not disagreeing with you, I want them to get it done!

Also on the half-baked, also agree. I have an Apple Watch and while I’m happy they are supposed to release better integration for the Apple Watch this year… it’s been frustrating to use the Apple Watch for heart rate monitoring when it feels purely random whether it will work or not.

The problem with Stages is that the company is failing. Their UK distributor recently said they had no expectation of getting more inventory. Stages customer support direct from the company is a horror show (it’s better in some places where there’s a separate distribution agreement). What you’re experiencing is an indication of what you can expect from Stages in the future.

No worries Doug, yes I might have been lucky with the SB20. As for venting, sometimes it’s therapeutic. As an aside, the banding is also broken in the clubs. It does keep everyone together but the cost is about 7kph. Led a Rapha 100k ride on the ā€œBig Ringā€ and it took close to 4 1/2 hrs :frowning: . It was a small group and every individual riding could easily do it in just over 3 hrs. We currently have a ticket with support and they acknowledge the problem but when will it get fixed? Just another gut punch for banded club rides! Zwift doesn’t make things easy… Cheers

Hi @shooj, or any other Zwift-teammate,

this post was marked as ā€œsolutionā€ - but not by me:

Does it mean with the refurbishment of the HUD we get the Stages SB20 integrated finally?
