Reebok (Sole) Z-Tech Treadmill Connection Failure

We just received this unit (built and shipped from Sole). On paper it would appear to be ideal for Zwift running on an up-to-date OS iPad. On the device connection screen I have no issue selecting the treadmill (though Zwift isn’t finding any cadence sensors. I thought my Scosche armband sensor had worked for this, in the past…?). I then select a route and my avatar moves, but immediately I have a black connection failure notification in the upper left corner and the app crashes. This has happened repeatedly. I haven’t managed to get Zwift to run properly, yet. I have no such issues on the bike with a Wahoo trainer.

Previously I had done some runs with this iPad and Zwift while using a Runn belt sensor, but I had so many connection drop-outs between the sensor and app that I haven’t done Zwift Run in years.

MTA: I did figure out one problem that was preventing connection: there’s a Reebok Cardio equiment app that I needed to put on my iPad. That allowed me to connect and start walking (and my speed and HR seemed to be accurate)…but I couldn’t go more than 30 seconds before the Zwift app would crash, so there’s something buggy between Reebok and Zwift…?

Zwift shouldn’t crash if a trainer/treadmill is buggy. I would contact support and have them look at the application logs. Ask them to explain why it crashed.

I had one of these delivered last week.

So far it works fine with Zwift - I’ve done 3 runs and Zwift connects fine to the treadmill and displays pace as expected.

Connected via BT, control the treadmill via the screen/buttons - only minor annoying thing is the pace & distance don’t display on the treadmill when it is read only mode connected to a 3rd party app.

I’ve not needed to run the Reebok app at all.

I’ve had challenges with the controllable speed/elevation via runna but that’s nothing to do with zwift.

Huh…so it worked pretty plug-and-play for you? Finding any info. re: the actual function of the unit is just really challenging. Had we not been able to determine that it’s actually designed/built by Sole, I’m not sure we would have pulled the trigger. But I love that it doesn’t have a built-in infotainment screen and appears to be designed almost specifically for use with Zwift.

Which version iPad are you using? Ours isn’t super new (4k 6th gen), but should be compatible by 2 generations. I couldn’t get it to connect at all without having the Reebok app installed on the iPad. But even with, it would only connect for maybe 20 seconds before Zwift would crash entirely. No evidence of any workout on my Zwift workout log.

I’ll play more with it, tomorrow. At least we have a solid 2 months to troubleshoot before having a treadmill is semi critical. Our ancient freebie Pro-Form picked a convenient time of year to totally die.

I’ve had it working via iPad (newest base model - whatever that is these days) and via pc & bluetooth (though this is proving challenging as the treadmill is overloading the circuit I’m on when running with the PC and a few other things)

If zwift is crashing on an iPad, there’s limited things you can do to fix it, reinstall the app and then if that fails raise a ticket with zwift.

Agree on reasons to buy it, the ‘slim’ front end and lack of screens was the selling point for us.. plus it’s a fairly large deck which doesn’t feel claustrophobic. And the price was very reasonable as it got reduced last week.

I have had to pull the Bluetooth adapter once to get it to show up as a device available to connect

Yup, we purchased for the EXACT same reasons. We’d been eyeballing it for close to a month and thought we’d wait to see if there were Labor Day sales – there were. And the price had been dropped, too. When we first started looking it was $1700, not including shipping. We paid <$1400, including shipping (Amazon had it for $200 cheaper than buying it direct from Reebok/Sole, in spite of it drop-shipping from the same warehouse). You must have hit the same deal.

I’ll be playing around with restarting and maybe re-installing everything, I expect. Hopefully doing that will do the trick. Or Zwift support can sort out what might be the problem. If it turns out it’s the iPad, it wouldn’t be the end of the world to upgrade that, I guess. Newer versions have a somewhat larger screen. So much for saving money on the treadmill, in that event. :face_with_tongue:

In further troubleshooting, I was still having no luck connecting, in spite of making sure all related apps and firmware were up-to-date and devices restarted. So, then I decided to try running Zwift with my bike (I typically use AppleTV w/iPad as companion device with minimal issues).

Immediately Zwift crashed. So maybe we will need to do factory reset on the iPad.

Does the treadmill work with your ATV setup?

Haven’t tried it with the ATV (the TV connected to that is well off to the side of the treadmill), but you’re right that would definitely further isolate the issue. I’ll go see if I can get that to connect. Hubby can try with his tiny iPad Mini and his Zwift laptop, as well. That would really narrow-down if it’s the old iPad that’s the real problem source.

Ohhoho…I think I may have figured it out. I got things to work with the ATV without issue. In a last-ditch effort I then went into the bluetooth menu on the iPad and disconnected, then reconnected the treadmill and it worked fine. I only did that because my Scoche armband HRM was no longer reading anything >0bpm on the treadmill, so I suspected something was wonky with the bluetooth connection between devices. That seemed to fix it. I did a couple of minutes on the treadmill using the iPad without any disconnection errors or things not displaying as expected.

Though that leads me to a different issue. I could have sworn my armband HRM would transmit cadence, but I could not get the armband to connect as a cadence sensor option, so I may be recalling that wrong. It’s been a really long time since I tried using any treadmill for Zwift runs.

You should never connect any device that you plan to use with Zwift in the Bluetooth settings for any device. Always let Zwift do the pairing.

It’s also unsafe to run Zwift on more than one device. Pick one and delete it from the other.

Treadmill is connected to bluetooth on iPad, Zwift does end up doing the pairing for the workout. That was not working properly before I disconnected and reconnected the treadmill from the iPad’s bluetooth set-up.

How is it unsafe to use ATV with my Wahoo trainer and iPad with the treadmill? The ATV set-up was turned off while using the iPad to run Zwift. Typically I use the iPad to run the companion app while riding with ATV. With the treadmill I run Zwift on the iPad and companion app through iPhone.

The risk is only if you have the device you are planning to use (trainer, HRM, treadmill) paired to the other device. If you’re super careful about that, you can do it. When troubleshooting, best advice is to rule out that possibility.
