Never seen this before with my Zwift Ride and MacOS setup: on today’s rides, my avatar has what looks like an orange shield or plate to the right of the shoulder or handlebars, and steering is unavailable. The avatar exclusively followed the centerline of the roadway on a Makuri ride and kept to the side lane on a New York ride.
Is this a setting I inadvertently activated? A bug? Anyone know how to get back to normal?

That means your steering device has you all the way to the side of the road. That’s not a setting. You can reset the controls (hold down the big Z button for 30+ seconds) and make sure the controller firmware is up to date. Aside from that you contact support and ask for replacement.
You can also recalibrate the controllers. Support can help you do that.
