is Dota a video game or a sport?

The TOS are based on games. It’s competition based on code.

Is Mclaren’s having flexible wings last year in breach of a specific rule. Was it outside the spirit of the rules, yes. Were they told to cut it out. yes. Did the rules eventually update… also yes.

You lost me there?

It doesn’t say. But given what Zwift said about the Bike Upgrade system in all of their press releases, they clearly intended for people to accomplish those things by riding their bikes in a normal manner, taking a long time to upgrade. That’s the argument for why progressing through the Bike Upgrades in this way is not the intended use of the system. Not just one little piece of the system, but multiple parts.

We can see what Zwift intended. It clearly wasn’t this. Therefore it’s not using the system as intended.

Trying to pin down some rule that’s broken is exactly the wrong way to go about it. Just like the harasser in a courtroom saying “what law did I break? I am free to walk down any street any time, and I’m free to say whatever I want whenever I want”. The not-so-precise concept of harassment doesn’t need other specific laws to be broken. Same here. ‘Not using Zwift as it was intended’ does not need any particular rule to be broken. The TOS clause doesn’t say “you can’t use Zwift as we’ve clearly specified.” They say “as intended”.

Most likely to have people spend more time on Zwift and hope that a lot wont suspend their account during the summer.

The first have been achieved and the second will most likely also happen together with the keeping the streak active with outdoor rides if you keep paying.

People play DOTA for millions of dollars per tournament and it’s a game that has many exploits. You can be disqualified for using them.

People are banned from MMOs for misusing scenery/terrain.

This is just a common occurrence in games. An exploit exists, people use it, and people get banned. The TOS is always vague.

People use exploits; people accuse them of cheating. Sometimes, they are fine, and sometimes, they are not. In no instance is it solely down to the platform; it is just fair game to do whatever you possibly can.

Taking the TOS only logic. I can connect a drill to zwift to unlock the bikes or win races because it isn’t specifically against the rules. Or ride with a crank length of 220mm to generate more power. It’s only using what is already there to gain a bit of an advantage.

Zwift says “Fun is Fast” so going Faster must be intended

I’m talking intended use of system features, but I see what you did there

I appreciate the discussion all of this has led too.

As much as I’d personally like Zwift’s rules to be stated in a clearer fashion they are not. That’s ultimately the direction we are trying to steer the conversation. Zwift is relying on the community to police itself with links where you can report people. Zwift needs to be doing more themselves. All this constant reporting just leads to a toxic community environment.

TOS and the Community guidelines are pretty vague.

I mentioned in the video weight doping. Someone commented and they are correct. the TOS doesn’t specifically mention weight doping and the community guideline only mention “pretending to be much lighter than you really are” So making your weight heavier is ok? I guess so.

Again. I really enjoyed reading these comments and I feel it’s been good that the discussion has moved away from “naming and shaming”. I appreciate everyone’s opinions whether I agree with them or not.

Earlier in this thread there were posts on rider(s) getting banned. There was speculation that rider(s) were getting banned due to teleporting. It has been confirmed by Zwift HQ that this ban was entirely accidental. The ban was lifted within a hour after Zwift realized what had happened.

What can be more in “the spirit of cycling” than this very conversation?

No that’s not either, because people were doing that in racing to try and zoom away on big downhills. They were going from say 65-70kg to something crazy like 250kg and flying away downhill and then resetting their weight back before end of descent to normal.

If you remember there was an enormous controversy when that was reported and it got blocked so that wasn’t possible anymore. So that isn’t okay.

To reiterate - the teleport to top of ADZ and Ventop and repeat descents stinks, no matter who is doing it and especially when it is racers (elite ones at that!). And when said users of loopholes are boasting of their efforts in the chat is even worse.

It makes me less likely to want to use Zwift and more likely to use something like PerfPRO studio that doesn’t have any cheats or loopholes. You can look and check (and use AI tools to help you) but you’ll find it doesn’t have any such loopholes.

Its not ok. I was making a sarcastic comment in regards to the fact the rules stated making your weight lighter was not ok.

Kudos to Zwift for making those changes and yes they removed the ability to change weight in the game during an activity.

We need more action from Zwift.

Yet we get a chihuahua in our back pocket and we get a streak saver

Luckily I can still change my crank length mid ride and go 30% faster!!! Must be ok.

Were all the bans mistake or just the one you refer to? Was the one you refer to also the one where they lost verified rider status?

lol, change crank length, change pedal bias.

I’ve heard of two bans that were overturned as “accidental” bans. On was checkmark rider, one was not. Check mark rider did lose checkmark because they have an actual set of rules. Interesting though is that it takes Zwift 5 days to put forward any sort of correspondence.

Without a checkmark you are back to normal status rider and apparently “Descenders” (thanks @Tom_J for the term) are ok? I don’t know.

All riders I’ve texted with have maintained the bikes in the garage.

As per previous posts Zwift needs to tighten things up.

So in summary then;

  • there are no rules about how you get bikes, do what you want.
  • don’t try to call anyone out, that’s against the rules.

Community spending more time enforcing the “don’t call people out” than advocating for more ethical practices.

Ride On.

I know that for the history of our show we have talked about being accurate with our data.

If I am remembering the context of what Zavarise said it was more a joke/poking fun at the people that don’t.

I just did a race with a couple guys who have had the same weight…for years…but for a random race on a Tuesday night it doesn’t matter. It was about me trying to get some VO2 and see if I could drop them. I didn’t and finished 2nd, then went to Watopia and follow a friend around while he was doing a workout.
