I just wish Zwift would provide some sort of clarity on the issue. I’ve considered going to a dedicated computer to get better graphics, but that seems like a wasteful purchase when the iPad should be capable - at least in theory it is. We know M chips are.
I have the M1 iPad Pro, and have waited to make any upgrades until I see something the M4 can do for me. Zwift would be one such reason to upgrade if the improvements were greater on M4 and beyond.
I use a 2024 Lenovo Thinkpad, W11 Pro. G12 i7-1260p 2100mhz, 12-core processor. 16gb physical memory. Intel Iris Xe 2gb GPU 5k2k resolution at 70hz, output to a LG 40" monitor.
Zwift is the worst resource hog, worse than Chrome with 50 open browser tabs and runaway GPU process. No bloatware, no resource-hogging background processes/apps, app takes a few mins to load and a minute or two loading the ride after selecting it. Gameplay lags sometimes which is freaking mind-boggling, since I’d imagine this setup is higher spec than at least 90% of Zwifters.
I always thought my friends who use Mac Minis and output to their TV’s had it good, but apparently we all have it bad, excepting maybe folks with desktops and high-end stand-alone GPU’s?
There must be something wrong with your setup.
I have an old gen 8 i5 , a GeForce 1060, 16 gigs ram and a Samsung SSD from that time.
Zwifts loads in 30 seconds, game itself and then again 30 sec for the ride.
Framerate is sometimes low, esp. on dusty roads, but never lags.
On my M4 Pro Mini I can run the absolute highest settings without any dramas. Even with detailed scenery and big groups of riders the FPS remains at 60fps and doesn’t move.
1.87 release notes indicated higher quality graphics available on ‘newer mac devices’. I just tried iPad m4 with 1.87 and there is still no option for ultra graphics? Can you please let us know if this will ever be supported or is it simply not something you are interested in supporting?
Zwift confirmed 10 months ago ultra was coming to the IPad M4s. Since then they’ve ignored all requests for information about this. Don’t hold your breath for an answer, Zwift don’t do customer service.
Just want to add my voice to this thread in support of not restricting Zwift graphics on capable Apple Devices or any device. Why not just open it up and have all modes available and let the end user decide if the performance is acceptable like they do in games. I for one am hoping the new Apple TV 2025 that is due out this year removes the Bluetooth connection limit (with the new chipset) and also has a capable GPU ie A18 Pro that can handle higher Zwift graphics profiles AND Zwift quickly recognise this fact and not make tweaks 3 years after its launch. I think Apple would do well to take this to Zwift directly as this would be an ideal Zwift setup for most people and Apple would sell many Apple TV’s off the back of it and may even make me reconsider switching back to Zwift from Rouvy (though they need to make a duo / partner subscription .. but thats a totally different topic).
Oh that wouldn’t be frustrating. Normally on iPads when connected with and HDMI adapter, it shows 4:3, but when you start playing say movie it shows that in full 16:9. I would have thought Zwift once started playing which switch into that movie mode, but not sure if that is a limitation of Apple or something Zwift needs to update for any maybe one of the reasons it’s taking longer than expected?
Unfortunately, yes that update was only for newer “Macs” not “iPads”. Macs would refer to Apple devices that run macOS such laptops and Apple desktops such as iMac and Mac mini.
1 Year since @AlanZHQ mentioned specifically iPad M4 support for Ultra was coming as soon as possible as they finalized things with partners. But since then it seems like plans have changed but no communication or if they have. Would be great to no if its no longer coming for all of us holding out getting a Mac mini etc in hopes that our more versatile iPad Pros will be capable soon.
That’s what I’m worried about. After all this time, the day we all invest in Mac Mini M4, iPad Ultra support will come out which would be terribly frustrating. That’s why wish we could just have some transparency on this front. Such as if no longer any plans for support, or unforeseen technical challenges that make it currently not practical, etc, while people would be upset, at least then we could all move on and plan accordingly. Hopefully we get some sort of frank update on the matter either way.
@AlanZHQ why are you ignoring the messages in here? It would be really nice to know if you are going to implement the ultra settings on iPads, if not we can look to purchase equipment that does run it……….
Sorry for the quietness on Ultra support for iPads. I’ll check with our team for the latest information and share an update here again when I have something new to share.
All we want to know is that they are still going ahead with ultra on m4 IPads. Not that difficult a question to answer. If it’s no, then we can look at alternatives to get the ultra profile.
