Wheel-on trainers are super noisy vs direct drive ones. Same thing: rollers vs direct drive/Kickr. My Kickr is super silent while my rollers are super annoying: thankfully, my neighbors are far enough, I never have to think of them LOL. You can spend quite a bit of money on thick -high end matts or even customize one (I have done that for treadmills) but you’re better off saving your money and upgrading into a direct drive.
If I would be living in a townhouse, apartment, I could see how a treadmill, wheel-on would annoy everyone if not set on the first floor.
The dedicated smart bikes like Kickr Bike are really quiet. Even so I suggest put thick rubber mats under them - one to catch sweat and two for dampening any noise.
I’ve found the direct drive trainers (with cassette and chain) can be pretty noisy too.
Thanks
Mostly i want to go away from the dedicated bike because it cant be stored away and seems to have so many small problems… - so tired of having to get a replacement - so the direct + bike would give me the option to store it away… and even carry it myself
A couples of years ago, I was about to purchase the new Kickr Bike (on the basket right to confirm the purchase -kind of peer pressured by the wifey to buy it :- ) and said No! No way, I get stuck on a dedicated bike! I bought another Cervelo P5 frame, and I built a 100% customized racing TT bike (under 16lbs), and I used the old racing bike as dedicated bike…
Yes, in the short-run, I spent more than the Kickr bike, but now, I have two superior setups… it’s a lot easier and cheaper to replace a Kickr with the latest model and upgrade the dedicated bike to match my racing bike, and I have a secondary racing bike.
Note: in the meantime, Wahoo raplaced my Kickr v4 for a Kickr v5 free of charge, so I got direct connect I wouldn’t have if I have purchased the original Kickr bike
Only reason im not pulling the trigger to to from tacx bike to m3 … is the solo reason of me being scared the more noise Will make the nabor - hear it the Price does not really matter than much. My health is worth every cent.
Hi @Sonny_Hansen, welcome to Forums. This is Juan from Zwift.
Certainly, direct-drive trainers run quieter than Wheel-on trainers, indoor bikes, or rollers. Here you have our public article about trainers’ compatibility.
You can make the decision that best suits you.
Ride On.
Direct drive trainers are not anywhere near as quiet as my belt drive smart bike. It’s not close.
Same here. The Kickr Bike I have is very quiet. No direct drive trainer will match the quietness of it.
That‘s what I don’t get why the new Zwift Ride has no belt drive. Lost opportunity!
Noise and vibration can be inhibited by air space. If all else fails, I’d look to make a platform leaving air space off the floor. That together with a decent pad should help a lot.
