Either one should be usable. You can put a 7 speed cassette on the Kickr Core. 135mm spacing is supported. “7 speed cassettes will require the 1.8mm spacer AND a 4.5mm spacer”
The cog on the Kickr Core Zwift One claims compatibility with 8-12 speed chains, so if your 7 speed chain happens to be a little too wide and rubs on the plastic bits on the cog you can put an 8 speed chain on your bike. These days most chains marketed as 6/7/8 speed compatible are essentially 8 speed chains.
Wahoo is anticipated to refresh their product line shortly, which may explain the current discounts on their products. I’ll wait a bit before making a purchase if your trainer is still working. Experience has repeatedly shown that new features in trainers are often not backward compatible!
That’s my bet! Wahoo has consistently followed a biennial release schedule for its KICKR lineup, with the last model, the KICKR v6, released in September 2022. However, while the supply of smart trainers has increased, demand has plateaued in recent years, so most likely Wahoo is facing challenges clearing out older inventory…
Personally, I’m looking to upgrade my v5 (which was provided to me at no cost in 2020 to replace a faulty v4), but I won’t jump the gun until the new version is released.
