Trying to just label everyone as ‘human’ would be great, if we weren’t starting from an uneven playing field to begin with. It’s why people claiming to be ‘colorblind’ don’t get it. The systems of the world, including laws, are not colorblind. Neither are good things like ethnic practices. So to say “I don’t treat anyone differently based on color or race or ethnicity” is just to deny that the rest of the world does that, and sometimes, to counter that, it’s good to treat people differently in those ways.
Simple example: if I have two friends, one male and one female, who are both going to go for a nighttime run in a local park, I am going to be more concerned about the female friend, and ask her to make sure she brings her phone, because she is statistically in more danger. If I was ‘gender blind’ and only saw my friends as ‘humans’, I would be ignoring the danger to her that does not exist in the same level towards him.
Adjectives are important because others have made them important.
Slippery slopes can be stopped by private companies who simply wish to stop symbols associated with hate from being displayed. A white supremacist could try to argue for the first amendment protection, but Zwift could simply and correctly say that the first amendment does not bind them in their private business decision at all.
Yeah, the Ukraine flag is absolutely another counter-point.
I do happen to think it’s a political issue. Being of a certain sexual or gender orientation is not political, but public displays can’t help but be political. That doesn’t come down to just the displayer’s intention, it is in part determined by what the political positions are. Being publicly LGBTQ+ friendly is definitely a political act. That sucks for a lot of people–their very existence is political. That’s part of the massive injustice. Straight people don’t have their sexuality turned into politics.
Part of the LGBTQ+ community can understand arguments above considering what is coming for this community in 8 days on Jan 20th. Still choosing between keeping the USA flag or switch to another.
I’m not bothered by that flag being in there, same as I don’t really take much notice of the pride jerseys or the scenery in downtown Watopia.
But if it’s going to end up in fight between the usual groups then out with all the flags and change names in Zwift to be initials with some random numbers after them to get rid of the “I stand with” or “I support” messages or the adverts for coaching businesses, physio businesses, etc. We can’t have nice things anymore because of that.
You can already see this has gone straight to the usual back and forwards arguments.
Seen some statements about the national flags not benefiting anyone else. I don’t agree, I’m proud to display my country flag and I suspect that a number of other people are as well. I like to see where people are from and it reinforces the wonder I feel that I’m sharing the same cycle experience with guys thousands of miles away.
Cool–I was the one saying I hadn’t heard any arguments for it, so thanks for that And that makes a lot of sense too. I guess I’d ask this: if someone doesn’t display a country flag, that doesn’t take away from your enjoyment, right? I’d suspect not–it’s cool to see country flags, but you’re not sad when someone doesn’t display one, right? So if someone were to display something else, there would still be country flags being displayed by others, maybe even most people, I’d suspect.
