Game Update v 1.80 [December 2024]

It’s supposed to work in group rides - any setting where navigation is disabled

It does work in group rides.

Zwift Baseline wheels seem to have become pizza cutter thin.
Anyone else seeing this?

Happening at least on Giant Propel; will check in a moment if this is frame specific or something weird is happening, swear they didn’t look like this before now.

I didn’t check; but… they’re indeed half the width of all other wheels, so something is wrong.

In the pens they are also not round, tyre and wheels are 50 pence shaped, only noticed this recently after latest update but could have been like that before (Ultra Definition in 4K on gaming PC)

Good explanation of this issue you are pointing out and some other stuff.

Yes, steering has become almost completely ineffective in large groups. However, the most annoying thing is that riders can bump you out of the draft to the left or right, even if you are steering against them. It’s somewhat ok if you can’t move in a pack because of a rider next to you (aka real life), but why should a rider be able to move and push you out of the draft if you are steering in the opposite direction to stay in the draft? That’s the most frustrating part. If Zwift made it equivalent so that riders couldn’t move against you if you are next to an avatar, just like you can’t move against them, then the new dynamics is admittedly more “sticky” for steering, but it would be the same for all. There shouldn’t be a preference for algorithm steerers to move against a manually steering Zwifter, but not the other way around.

Then we can debate whether the ability to move left/ right in a pack should be harder/ easier, but let’s at least have a level playing field for any given level of stickiness…

That’s “the bug” in the PD code right now that’s causing all of the grief.
There’s no reason for packs to split apart; let alone a single rider.
Also for clarification, steering riders cannot “push” folks out of the way.

For clarity, even with steering turned on, this can and does still happen.

Made worse, if you have steering on, and someone gets besides you and also is forced away from the pack, and even if you do have steering, you are blocked in place; so the only options are:

  1. Wait it out.
  2. Back off and steer back into the blob.
  • Non-steering users have the exact same two choices.

So for everyone I’ve seen all over youtube and facebook right now saying this is Zwift trying to make people buy steering… no.
This is just very clearly a bug in the code; because it happens to both users, and both have the same solutions.

Quick look at the video Dejan shared; so far that hasn’t entirely been my experience, I think some of the fault of the test is how quickly the author of that video would swing from one side of the road to the other.
This is actually kind of shown at the 7:30ish mark, where he smoothly transitions to one side of the road and non-steering follows; but as soon as he does full tilt to opposite, the non-steering avatar is either “confused,” or, it’s out of the “cone of recognition” that there’s another rider to its side.

Not entirely sure which is correct, both could be in terms of how the code functions.

I’ll have to more properly sit down and watch the video and listen to what’s being said.

What I will say is back in early December though when we started to notice “something is wrong”, was when two riders with steering enabled, were glued to each other like magnets; assuming one rider was actively steering, and another was off the controls…
Meanwhile, non-steering users would ignore them like nothing was happening.

That would’ve been just prior to 1.80

It used to work for me as well. Sounds like I have a controller issue then.

Does it work as u-turn in a free ride if you hold it down?

Since riding in any of the group rides is a carp shoot, I’m off doing a training plan so hopefully they figure it out before I finish or I’m jumping ship. I’ve been with zwift going on 10 years and this is one of the worse updates that has ruined using the platform…

Yes, it works as a U-Turn in free ride if you hold it down.

I assume you are talking about the first part of the video where I demonstrate the autosteering?
Please do watch the video properly as I explain it quite simply.

Seems unlikely (though not impossible if it’s intermittent) to be a controller issue. Is this consistent for you in group rides? Might just be a weird one-off glitch.

I don’t necessarily have an issue with that (mirrors reality), but then why can riders next to me push me out of the draft? It needs to be equal for all riders. (It’s the same experience whether I have enabled or disabled steering, and if I have enabled steering I can’t even hold the line by steering against the rider pushing me out).

Even worse, why can a rider behind you push you out of the draft while overtaking. IRL they would end up bleeding on the ground.

If a rider is approaching me from behind, my line in game should never be altered to accommodate. That’s just silly.
But I have seen that quite often, especially when riding solo.

What needs to happen is, if someone is trying for a for an overtake, their avatar needs to get pushed to the left or right as there isn’t any room in the “pack” to push through. I also think this would eliminate a lot of the push through the pack sprints and the end of a race. Why should you be able to ride through everyone in front?

This (forcing advancement on the outside of the pack, into the wind) is what Zwift’s best and brightest users were suggesting the entire time through PD4 development, which we were told was impossible, and then they figured out a way to approximate it and it worked out fairly ok-ish once we got to PD4.1.1.

Now with PD5 apparently they’re going the opposite route - you advance through the group and force everyone else out into the wind.

And @Mark_Cote_ZHQ is apparently unaware that there are people having issues with PD5.

Mark can you please read this thread and then engage with your user base?

Should PD5 have it’s own thread/topic? I though PD was often unrelated to software version updates?

Development site has slowed down. Enjoying a break from zwift, not much compelling me back at the moment. Hope to see a bit of a roadmap for the coming months
