Forced Update Deferral

It may only be me that is interested in this, but would it be possible to defer updates until after you finish a ride.  There are many days when I only have a window of an hour or so to ride, and too many times that gets cut to 50 minutes due to waiting for an update to download and be applied.

Would be great if you could just defer the update to start after you finish a ride and then it would be ready to go next ride.  My PC that runs Zwift is dedicated to the trainer and thus isn’t left on all of the time.

Small thing I know, but would be appreciated.

I don’t think it is always feasible to defer update in software that talks to central services.  If you have old software it might not for example communicate correctly with the server based software.

Maybe Zwift could thought -standardise their software release process.  For example, if we know that it would only happen at 16:00 on a Tuesday then we can plan that into our workout schedule.  Or if this is not possible, announce upcoming releases in advance to their release stating when they will occur.

For now though, I usually load Zwift in advance to getting changed for my ride.  Then I can start any downloads before I start getting dressed for the ride and sorting out my hydration.

Hej Bob, you are not alone. Today I was standing in my kit, all geared up only to find out that I cannot start using Zwift for another 20 minutes. Luckily Zwift is not the only one in this smart-trainer workout business

My PC is dedicated to Zwift and I leave it on.

The auto-update feature is great. I opened Zwift this morning and I already had the latest update (12/30).

The PC draws very little power when on but idle.

I’m busy like everyone else … and when I have time to ride I want to ride NOW! not 15 or 20 minutes after I get a software update push.

Kills my ride and my mood – siting there waiting for the update to complete – with no idea if it’s going to be a quick update or a long one …

Allow a user to defer the update until the end of their ride

For online games the client must be up to date in order to connect to the server or you will get errors and not be able to ride at all.

Zwift has a process that runs in the background when our PC starts. It’s always giving me a pop-up if my Internet connection is lost. It would be useful if it prompted for an update whenever it’s available. That way we might have a chance to update the SW at our convenience and before we want to run Zwift.

I have a feature request and I know it’s potentially a very tall task. Can you revisit your policy for deploying updates - either to not force an update to install or to give an option to install it after a ride is over? When I go to ride, it’s like first playing update roulette with regards to whether I’ll be able to start riding right away or not. Today I had to wait 30 minutes for the update to install and I only had a brief 60 minute window to exercise. I know I don’t have to tell you how that made me feel. If you could consider changing how updates are installed, that would be an awesome change.

A roll back feature would be nice also. Each new update has the potential for ruining a Zwift experience. The Aple du Zwift was not worth losing ambient sounds all across Watopia.

You could get errors because the client would not match the server version and you could end up riding alone or on the wrong course (or not at all).

All the Zwift updates for me seem to take less than 5 minutes to complete.

For posterity: this feature is live in Zwift Launcher v 1.1.10.
