ETA on new HUD?

Keep getting excited about new game updates but still cannot see when the new HUD changes are coming? Nearly the end of summer here and would love to start the autumn season with the fresh new UI that’s been showcased.

I’ve not seen any ETA other than it’s going through internal testing (by non dev teams as well) so assume it’s fairly close. If i were to guess maybe sometime next month :man_shrugging:

We wait till 22nd September and then if nothing comes out on the next day riots all over Watopia will start. Beware Zwift :joy:

We all recall the time when Zwift was just a paddle’s length away from launching Rowing, so I’ve learned to temper my excitement about Zwift’s announcements on future updates to avoid the sting of disappointment… LOL

That’s true but it has been officially announced and leaked videos of it so i’m 99.9% sure it’s coming just a matter of when.

It’s coming zooooon!

like the velodrome!

You’re likely correct; however, the culture at Zwift, steered by management, tends to set high expectations and underdeliver. By anticipating nothing, I shield myself from disappointment… LOL

I hope it includes options like w/bal and draft

More to the point will we be able to actually read it without needing a digital microscope on half of the devices that zwift runs on?

You can’t even pinch zoom to help see the lists of events / just ride etc to select one. Disabling features that have been on every smartphone since 2007.

If the hud and interface is never going to improve on phones - at least come up with a tangible list of available tablets that will run zwift - specifically at the cheaper end, because if zwift developers could have created a visible hud in the last decade the software runs just fine on the original iphone se. So suggestions to buy the latest ipad or rtc 4900 gaming pc make no sense - although I’m they would work.

The only place I can zwift is a garage, it’s not a nice air conditioned panelled garage that’s been turned into a room, if I leave consumer electronics in there they’ll just break - tablets and TVs are not made to the standards that things like di2 are… That means whatever I view zwift on has to be portable so I can carry it into the garage along with my water bottle, hrm et al.

But equally whatever I take, unless it’s my phone, I have zero use for it other than zwift. I have all the TVs and computers inside the house I’ll ever need. So I want it to be as cheap as I can get away with whilst still running the software.

When I search zwift for tablet info there’s no good advice. A list of meaningless specs, in the gaming PC world you might be able to name a processor and gpu and give people a reasonable chance to compare other cpus and gpus, but that doesn’t work in the tablet or phone world.

Similarly, I see the basic notion of whether the software works is whether it’s on the store - but how is anyone who doesn’t own the tablet to know that? I can’t unbox in argos and check.

The best fix of all would simply be a UI design that worked on devices with small screens, because everyone owns a smartphone and if that phone runs zwift the only issue then becomes that the UI is next to useless because it’s too small to read - and contains a ton of information I have no interest in - I don’t care who else is riding in zwift, nor how fast they are going, where they’ve been, what their name is yet this takes up nearly 1/3rd of the screen space. The other 3rd typically has a leaderboard of some kind that, again, I cannot see. Meanwhile most of my own stats are barely visible - I can just about make out my wattage.

Every other app that displays stats, including much smaller devices like garmin edge manages to show stats that are readable. This isn’t something that requires 10 years of development resource to achieve.

A new UI, especially one that you can see the terrain would be welcome, but you need to be able to see it - and if that’s really not possible then you need to give a member of staff a couple of thousand dollars budget to buy a bunch of tablets from argos or whatever the equivalent in the USA is and create a list of current, value tablets that run the software - so we know what to buy. The frustrating thing is, these flaws have been around for a decade and it’s the simple stuff.

I think you might be disappointed. Zwift has indicated that there would be just a handful of options, such as field showing your energy expenditure in kilojoules. A truly customizable HUD should offer a lot more features. For example, it would be fantastic to see the incorporation of Core temperature and oxygen saturation sensors, providing users with some cutting-edge tools for training and racing. Fulgaz has already implemented this, and Indievelo got it on the list. Is there any possibility of this happening, @evan-zwift?

Undoubtedly.

Although I’ve just dug out an old linux laptop and I’m streaming using steam. The wifi is just about up to streaming to the garage. So I can see the hud now.

The disadvantage? At one time zwift would up its privilege level when updating so you’d lose mouse control via steam if an update happened and you’d have to quit an exit steam. Now they seem to be doing this privilege escalation every time you run zwift, so to use steam link / remote play you have to run steam as administrator.

The advantage is, I haven’t had to spend any money. Although I’m only getting 720p because the laptop is old, the host machine is a decent gaming PC and the quality is much higher than ios or android versions.

But it’s silly that you could spend £500 or £1000 on a tablet and the graphics would look the same as on an original iphone se from 2016. Someone needs to get hired at zwift to shout and throw things across the room as Steve Ballmer was famous for doing at Microsoft because it’s a decade old now and they’ve not even added very basic things.

All that money they threw away on youtube adverts too.

Okay, so I’ve just visited This Season on Zwift and there’s a new info regarding HUD: Coming September 4

On September 9th a new thing called “challenges”
will be introduced:

CHALLENGES
Reach your fitness goals and unlock bonus XP while you’re at it! With ‘Challenges,’ we’ve curated a series where each challenge has five activities to complete—a convenient and effective way to boost your fitness!

When was this updated? If September 4th is confirmed that would be brilliant.

I was on the same page a few days ago and there was no date. Also “Challenges” weren’t there, so it must be pretty new.

Hopefully see some posts across their socials tomorrow then to confirm these dates, cheers for that update

What can I expect from the HUD refresh?
Not only will the new HUD include customizable metrics, but you will have more data options available in the power display, a new climb mode and updates to the mini map.

The team is definitely interested in hearing feedback about what other customization options would be useful, so please do share after the new HUD launches and let us know what you think.

If one of your team has a Garmin Edge 1030, have a look at the customisations you can do with that in terms of what it can display:

  • showing 30 second average power
  • 3 second average power, etc.
  • Even 20 minutes average power. Someone might like to see that on their ride without having to do a specific FTP test.
  • average cadence

Maybe you might want to see your average speed or some other metrics.

Hey Evan, thanks for asking for feedback on customisation…
Due to my health, I care little about power while riding, I care much more about HR - especially HR zones. I’d love to see the running HR zone widget available in the cycling HUD.
