Erg vs Sim Mode - Zwift Workouts

Hello - I’ve been using zwift for about a year now and really enjoy the races and group rides.

I’m now trying to participate in the group workout rides. Unfortunately, it seems like I’m spinning at a very high cadence to stay anywhere close to the required wattage…and this is while I’m in the hardest gear.

Question - do I need to manually make sure I’m in Erg mode for the group workout rides? Based on my research so far, it sounds like the mode gets pre-set for the type of ride, Sim for rides and races and Erg for workout rides.

Also, looks like you can simply check which mode your in by simply touching the screen during the workout.
