Careful, you’re ‘lecturing’ now. This here be the internet–NO RULEZ! pew pew pew!
I’m not entirely sure that it is a lack of respect that people are talking about other apps, isn’t it about informing what options are out there? I totally get that this is a Zwift forum, it’s also a democracy. I haven’t seen (at least I don’t believe) anyone from any of the apps taking advantage on here and promoting the apps. I’ve taken it as people who are very disappointed and venting. Of course this can be spun both ways, by those who are happy on zwift and those who aren’t!
I think it’s great that we are fortunate to be in a society, country(ies) that allow people to openly speak about what they want - regardless as to whose side they are on. I have no ill will to anyone, least of all someone who doesn’t agree with me.
I do think people should be able to talk about what software they are going to try but that’s my opinion (and probably one that some may disagree with on here but that’s ok too!).
I won’t disagree with most of what you’re saying (although privately owned forums aren’t democracies )
All I said above was to talk about ‘consideration’, like the other poster talked about ‘understanding’. There are some posts that are just saying “I’m off to try such and such”, and others that are veering towards much more than that.
I have not said ‘stop’, I’m just pointing to ‘things to consider’ That others are seeing it as ‘lecturing’ is likely just a sign that people are feeling injured and upset. Not saying that as a slight, people are legit upset.
My husband and I have been with Zwift since Beta and Jarvis Island. We’ve watched it grow and really take off. And during this time we’ve seen other platforms come along such as IndieVelo and MyWoosh. Both of which you can ride for free. My husband uses both Zwift and IndieVelo. I stuck with Zwift, more out of a sense of loyalty than anything else. I do think Zwift holds the majority in regard to numbers of riders and that is attractive as it’s nice to ride in company. But other platforms are attracting more members and I suspect they’ll attract an awful lot more now.
I’m leaving Zwift because I’m not happy with the sudden hike in the price or the way it’s been done with not much notice really. For me it’s a stretch too far when times are already hard due to increases in essential things such as food! My husband has also left. We’re heading off to IndieVelo but are sad to have to say goodbye m as we’ve been with Zwift since the beginning.
FWIW, I don’t know that we know how this was intended to be released. A (crappy) journalism outlet jumped the gun and released the news before they were supposed to. So Zwift’s plan to release the info, whatever it was, was gone. (Not saying it would have been better, tbc. They’ve dumped big layoffs that affected the product on us before with no warning.)
Now you have me reminiscing about the Good Old Days. I think it was the norm in the olden days. Particularly with Usenet newsgroups. Most of the “policing” was done by peer pressure - at least on the newsgroups I frequented. There were moderated newsgroups since the 80s, although I think they worked on the basis that any post had to be approved before it would be distributed, rather than the sort of moderation we find in today’s Web forums. This norm propagated forwards into early Web forums too. I posted on plenty of unmoderated ones back in the day.
I didn’t moderate the one I created (alt.comics.2000ad
). That said, it’s fair to say many groups had “written” rules of some type. alt.tv.red-dwarf
(one I hosted the website for for years) had a primer for example:
https://red-rose.com/www.cobalt.demon.co.uk/alt.tv.red-dwarf/primer.html#Pols
But if you read that, you’ll note it’s mostly just asking nicely.
Not really relevant to the subscription increase, but I always like to talk about when all this was fields.
Even Reddit user-moderates based on each sub’s expected behavior. But ah, newsgroups
Definitely heard that someone in the “media” released it ahead of schedule but I think what a lot of users might have preferred was not so much a response of it’s happening and if you want to move from monthly to annual tough but a response that gave people chance of say a week to change plans and stick with Zwift for at least another year. That option was of course not taken. It’s a shame that this has caused so much bitterness and could have been avoided!
It’s been widely reported on various platforms the normal YouTube channels and just about any social media sports network, I think the only way someone missed it would be living on the moon
Yeah, it was Outside. (Ask me about how much I don’t like them, lol) Given that the media had the news, it’s likely that it was going to be released sooner rather than later. But maybe that was still supposed to be a week out. I know journalists get pretty big leads sometimes about new bike models, things of that nature. No idea how long Outside was supposed to be waiting. Maybe Outside didn’t even know/read that part of the release. Would not surprise me.
Knowing Zwift there’s probably a good chance they forgot to put the embargo date on the press release.
I don’t follow a single Youtube channel, or any social media (unless a couple of Discords count as social media). Maybe that is equivalent to the moon these days
Whatever anyone’s opinion of Zwift is, I guarantee my opinion of Outside is lower
100% agreement.
If Zwift decides to let those posts remain then it’s fine. They could remove them but haven’t. The forum has rules and that’s not one of them. The CEO has said repeatedly that he wants to earn peoples’ business every month and I think that’s a good thing. I routinely tell people to try all the apps and choose what’s best for them. That’s how I interpret his remarks as well. I had a fun race today.
Maybe one of those unwritten rules is attempting to dominating the conversation by replying to Every. Single. Comment.
I haven’t seen direct promotion, I’ve seen open debate about the price change and the alternatives. Getting all high and mighty and trying to control the narrative like somehow you’re the zwift forum police just makes you look silly.
Perhaps a better angle for you to take would be to describe what it is about Zwift’s featureset and future vision is it that means the price increase is comfortable for you. Everyone has their own view on that and sharing it is fine. As is debate about the relative merits of the competition. This isn’t North Korea.
Would you go into IndieVelo’s forum (Discord?) and promote another platform? It is just something about it that says - “No, that is not good manner, maybe I should use other channels? ”
Yeah, I just think that’s different than much of what’s going on in this thread. As I said, some posts are one thing, and some are very different. I’m on the side of ‘community norms’, but apparently that’s passe anymore for some (not saying that’s your point)
Maybe stop replying to me then? Just spitballing there.
Meanwhile:
Me: Also some consideration for the fact that this is a corporate forum for a specific product.
Me: I’m just saying it’s typically frowned on
Me: But I’ve made my point, behave how you want to behave.
You: Getting all high and mighty and trying to control the narrative like somehow you’re the zwift forum police
Well you’ve done a good job of derailing the thread I’ll give you that.
