Zwift and Treadmill Control Questions & Recommendations

I’ve been scouring the internet for treadmills that allow zwift and/or TrainingPeaks to control the treadmill, as Bart says, it’s like playing pinball when you are running if you are in an intense workout!!

There are apps like Kinni (NoblePro) that are able to send this information back to the treadmill via FTMS and some other versions of Bluetooth, I can honestly say that having this kind of functionality built into Zwift would really polish the experience of what is already my favourite and most used platform.

Are there any plans to do this in the near future, if so any timeline we can see? I’m ready to upgrade my treadmill and want to make sure that if this is available, it’ll work with the model I buy…

No, no plans for Zwift to allow auto incline or speed I’m afraid.

You can however do it using a 3rd party app called QZ Domyos.

There’s a Facebook group all about it.

The developer is super helpful.

It’s really sad that Zwift aren’t on board with this, there must be a huge demand building for it!!

Thanks for the info, appreciated, I’ll check that out.

There is the demand but remember that running on Zwift is free so you can’t expect huge amounts of development.
Having an app control your treadmill has it’s own potential litigation if something goes wrong so i can imagine the reluctance.

In my ignorance I didn’t realise it was free to run on Zwift, I’ve always been a paid member as I cycle there too…

I see your point about the ‘things’ going wrong, but is that any worse than busting your nuts on a bike if the chain snaps, surely by using it you accept the risks!

Difference is that whilst a broken chain can lead to injury it’s less likely to cause the level of injury falling off a treadmill will. I’ve done both so can testify that treadmill falls can be nasty, especially if you don’t get spat off the back cleanly.

Zwift can distance themselves from it citing poor maintenance or a faulty chain.

If the treadmill changes speed directly as a result of an instruction from Zwift there more of a causation link if you fell.

I’d happily click a disclaimer at the start of a run to allow Zwift to allow control of speed and incline as I’m sure many others would.
If you go down the QZ path for auto incline then have fun.
Running up Alpe Du Zwift is enormous fun…not.

Likewise on the waiver, and to be honest if they did implement it, I’d happily pay for it too…

Hear you on the falling off a treadmill, I did a classic and absolutely failed to make it look intentional!!

I did just have a look at QZ, looks very interesting and I will have a play with it, thanks for the recommendation. As for Aple, that is definitley my first test, I’m a trail runner normally so hills are my playground :smiling_imp:

Trails for me too. Body won’t tolerate roads anymore.

QZ is an absolute must. I’m in close contact with the developer who’s an absolute diamond. He’ll work tirelessly with you to get things working but in reality it’s pretty simple. You can ditch the footpod, Runn or whatever you use to link to Zwift.

I’m happy to help get you up and running, i use the app daily and have used it for over a year now.

I use my name here but in game I’m .10k every day in 2023

Thank you so much, that’s very kind!!

I’ll try and have a go at setup and nudge if I have any questions, I’m quite technically minded so happy to have a bash.

Will keep you posted outside the forum so we don’t clog it :innocent:

So I had a play with my treadmill and struggled a little, tried to use the nrfconnect app too and it wouldn’t pick up my treadmill.

I tried with my phone connected and could see the Mac address of the treadmill, nrfconnect wasn’t picking it up or at least not via the same address.

Wonder if you could offer any advice, I don’t think my treadmill has ftms, only Bluetooth for audio…

which treadmill do you have?

Hi Roberto, thank you for your message, I have the JLL T-350

Hi! Please fill a new ticket on the QZ github page and I will assist you. Maybe your treadmill is wifi only and you need to install also the QZ companion on it.

Thank you so much Roberto, I am new to GitHub so not 100% sure I’ve done that correctly but hopefully you should see a new ticket now.

Hey Stuart, I’d love to reach out if the offer is still available.

I’m conscious Roberto probably gets hammered with queries so don’t want to pester the poor guy too much! I’ve got my treadmill finally setup after conveting the gym and had a play with QZ but it wasn’t successful.

I’m setup with Zwift running on an Apple TV+ which works really well with direct connection to the treadmill, I then installed QZ on an android tablet and it wouldn’t pick up the treadmill unless I manually selected the device, which I did and it seems to connect to the treadmill. Zwift will then pick up QZ but not as a cadence sensor (I’m unsure if this is needed?).

What I did notice is that when I press ‘START’ in QZ, it automatically stops after 15-20 seconds, I looked at the setting for ‘Mad Bluetooth’ but this didn’t make a difference either.

That’s about as far as I got… Any advice greatly appreciated!
