Why TD at 100% in Zwift Academy 2024 races? It makes absolutely no sense to me.

No, it was a joke. Zwift has made virtual shifting a real benefit in racing by enabling almost unlimited gearing that is quite unlikely to exist on a real bike.

Yes, but in other races the TD is not set at 100%
There should be an option if you want to compete for the pro-contract or if you just want to join an event with a lot of contestants. For the 0-180 category it should be clear one is not competing for the pro-contract.
For most races it would not matter so much, but climbing Ventoux on a 39x24 gear is not my daily excercise. In fact I am quite disappointed coz I was planning a nice 30 minute effort until my legs started to explode due to high power and low cadence. The first 5.7km until the long steep part was still manageable, but from there I needed some rest a couple of times.
