Steering on mountain bike course - feedback!

when did you test this, it look like your last activity was April 30. Did you update the app to the latest version?

Yes. Road a couple of miles, turned onto repack ridge. Centre bars and ride straight into the countryside. Steering sensitivity doesn’t change anything. Companion on bars. Even have a steering stand.

Paul, quitting out of repack screws up the track upload. Shows a zero length ride on zwift and doesn’t sync with strava. Which is fair enough. Getting teleported back the the start is bound to break things.

@Simon_Boulton: do you have a magnetic case or a magnet on your phone?

Nope. No magnetic case. Both iPod and Android both mounted on plastic handlebar mounts (iPod an outfront mount, Android on the bar). Both using same wifi network as ipad and showing map correctly (and show centre bar message etc in tandem with ipad).

what Android phone do you have. Can you try to download a compass app on the android phone and see if it show the correct direction.

Sony Xperia XA1 Ultra. Android 8.

Compass isn’t showing the correct direction.

Does zwift rely on the compass? The ipod doesn’t have one yet acts like it supports the companion app.

I think it uses the accelerometer and magnetometer or maybe only the magnetometer.

OK, I’ve calibrated my compass successfully, I’ll give it another go.

It’s a shame you have to ride for 2 miles just to check if hardware works…

At Least you are warmed up when you get there. LOL

Yeah, at least I got an extra couple of miles in.

But… no luck. Compass all working nicely. Steering still does nothing. Even when holding the phone in my hand and waiving it about.

That is strange. I don’t think I have any more options to suggest.

And you said you are on the latest version Companion app (3.8.0 (636) . settings/about.

shooting in the dark here. did the companion app ask for permissions when you installed it, can it be that it need location access.

Yeah, that’s the version.

I think you might be onto something. Just checked permissions and it doesn’t have location services granted. Possibly because it wasn’t a new install but an update (I didn’t get prompted).

I guess I’ll be doing another couple of miles…

You will get a proper workout!

Talking about unplanned workouts. When Zwift released the MTB, i got on the bike with shorts and T-shirt, for a “quick” ride. Well 30 min later covered in sweat… LOL

Well, I am sweaty. But still no luck.

No… :sob:

Now I am totally out of ideas. Apart from uninstall and reinstall.

:frowning:

Awsome course!

Im having some issues with the stearing due to my WIFI. The paincave is a bit isolated from the WIFI so the stearing is a bit laggy ( optimized the WIFI as much as i could )

Would be awsome to acctually implement auto stearing option for people that cant do the stearing (tacx neo smart bike , bad connection to the companion app etc )

The MTB course is sooo fun

Hey Simon!

I saw your conversation come in to the support team. Hope the agent you got was able to assist you in this!

I have been riding the course and I have seen three issues: 1) Bar centering drift- I center the bars and then after riding a bit I find I have to hold then turned a bit to go straight. If I recenter it is fixed again. It would be nice to have a one button bar recentering- just stop, hit the button, and done. 2) Lack of intertia- I find that the bike wildly oversteers no matter what the sensitivity is set to. Especially when going fast. The bike doesn’t take into account the inertia of a real bike in steering- the amount of time it takes to lean the bike, the gyroscopic action of the wheels, etc. All of those things slow the steering down as you go faster and faster. Zwift should do the same. 3) The view needs to be able to look up and down the trail when the grade changes. The way it is now you don’t see where the trail is going until after you drop down a descent and by then it is hard to correct the steering.

Yeah, got a quick response. Great stuff. Log files for android and iPod have been sent.

A quick update. After a few email exchanges it’s been suggested it could be the iPad that’s the problem and could I run Zwift on something else.

My enthusiasm is waning, so it may be a while until I bother trying it. In the meantime has anyone got steering working running Zwift on an iPad Pro 12.9 (gen 1)?

Just in case anyone else is using an iPod it’s worth noting at no point has it been suggested that the companion app shouldn’t work with an iPod touch (6th gen), which doesn’t have a magnetometer.
