I have the Zwift ride with the wahoo kickr set up.
As I have never cycled on a road bike since I was a kid and I’m new to cycling in general.
I could do with some tips of how to stand on the Zwift ride. It feels very awkward and unnatural. I have looked at the tennis ball set ups that you can buy on eBay and I Wonder if these would help.
Or maybe it’s just something I need to get the knack of and practice more.
Thanks for the link.
I think maybe I’m not leaning far enough forward and not using a high enough gear, maybe that’s where I’m going wrong. I have heard a few people don’t like the cushioning of the tennis balls or a rocker plate. They say it gives a little when they push down and they prefer something solid, obviously that’s just their opinion.
I may also have to do just some rides and practice standing for a minute every five minutes or something similar instead of doing workouts
Thanks again.
Another thing to consider if you are standing for climbing or pressure relief (not sprinting) is that the bigger you are, the greater the cost of standing. It is more work to lift a bigger body. Using a larger gear is certainly required but it should be noticeable if you are not getting sufficient resistance.
It could well be. You need to change up a couple of gears or so when you stand, unless the resistance has just got a lot harder on its own (e.g. starting a significant hill).
A lot of people find that it feels really odd and unnatural to stand up out of the saddle, but some practice will have you soon getting used to it.
You shouldn’t need to shift gears to stand. People often will, as they have a higher maximum force standing.
There’s no reason you shouldn’t be able to stand while coasting and turn the pedals a half turn at a time (ie. right foot forward then left foot forward).
This is just standing up, not a special bicycle skill, on a trainer. Coasting slowly with pedals level on a bike IRL is also a basic skill people should develop if they can’t do it.
In almost every instance that I stand on my Zwift ride I am shifting up 2 or more gears. It really depends on your cadence while seated and standing.
When I’m seated I’ll spin the pedals around 90-95 RPM
When I’m standing I feel comfortable in the 70’s so I need to increase resistance in order to achieve the same power.
