Hello all.
Sometimes I start a workout and the Zwift welcome tekst will say something uplifting like “toady we have a fine mtb workout for you…”. At that point I cancel the workout because I don’t want to do a mtb workout. Or because I think the workout will not be suited for a road biker.
What is the idea behind a ‘mtb based workout’ in Zwift?
Thanks for solving my puzzle.
Personally I prefer gravel, but why shouldn’t there be MTB workouts in zwift, does it have to be all boring road stuff
I’m fine with gravel or mtb workouts. I just wondered why it wasn’t mentioned in the workout menu.
Just because as soon as it started it was mentioned as a mtb workout.
No biggy.
It’s clear that you need different skills for a MTB ride, compared to a typical road bike race. As an MTB rider, you often have to accelerate rapidly and go up and down steep but rather short climbs with full effort and a high heart rate. You can practise this in a workout.
Thanks for reaction. I understand all that. MTB is different from road biking in many aspects.
What I didn’t understand is that I just picked a workout and after starting the workout it appeared to be a mtb workout. Or at least I was spoken to as if I was a mountainbiker (which I’m not).
Is there a seperate MTB section in Zwift world?
Zwift does not have a good workout recommendation system yet, so if you are seeking a particular result from your training, you’ll need to examine the details of the workout and decide if it’s right for you. If you’re happy with any workout (no judgement!) the MTB workouts won’t do you any harm and might even be exactly what you need as a road rider. They often include short hard efforts and cadence variations.
As Paul has said above the workout facility is possibly not as good as it could be, hopefully Zwift are still working on it to make improvements.
I don’t really use workouts much but hopefully some help to save you opening up an MTB workout you may not wish to then undertake.
When you open up the workout in game (and before you click on Start Ride) you should see a brief description of the workout it might include MTB in the description. First MTB workout I looked up did show it as an MTB workout.
As far as I am aware there is nowhere In Game to search specifically for MTB workouts. However you can use the link below to get more information on all Zwift workouts (and possibly many old Zwift workouts which are not easily available in game)
Using the link and search for MTB I found 31 workouts which are most likely MTB specific/related.
So if somebody, not you, specifically wanted MTB based workouts they could then look up where within Zwift In Game they could be found [Hard Starts #2 is in 60-90 minutes workout folder]
Clearly specifically looking up something you don’t want to then do is a waste of time and effort but hopefully using the link provided you might be able to search for something you are keen to ride.
Thanks Ian and Paul, that clarify’s things. Or to the extend that there are some improvements to make in the workout selection proces. It is fine for me now. And you’re right, a MTB focused workout won’t do me any harm, it might even be a good idea,
Thanks.
I would say to train for MTB rides on a road bike would require hard VO2 intervals or 30 -90 sec hill repeats.
A 40/20 type work out could work with a rest period every 4-5 intervals.
