Racing Score enabled in Zwift Labs events [July 2024]

Ok tnx for feedback…was just weird and curious.

it’s done by design. With the limitation that zwift has to create 2 events to be able to have 10 pens. it’s quite possible LOW riders click on the wrong event and just automatically signup to the lowest possible pen. Which would still be quite a bit above their rank and have a really poor experience and negative feedback,

In an ideal world a single event could have any number pens to avoid such confusion. Hopefully somewhere on the zwift work stack to improve.

I’m thinking - wouldn’t this new racing score work quite well with mass starts? I think the danger with 10 separate pens is that the individual pens might not have enough riders - in mass start - maybe it would be possible to calculate the podiums etc, after the race (maybe even after score updates) - this way someone with 200 rs managing to keep up with 400 rs group or so and easily beating their own ‘category’ might actually get a bump to go over the 200rs pen, and be scored against the next pen.

it’s a balance. i don’t think 10 will be the the norm but at peak times or big series that could work well which is why i think it’s only the 18.30 UK zwiftlabs race has 10 pens the earlier time slots are 5.

Exactly, Gordon. In this testing phase, we’ve focused on preventing the scenario you described for lower-end score racers. We’re exploring several options and may make adjustments based on how the initial races unfold.

Any reason why Zwift does not want to tackle the issue of serial quitters, at least perhaps including them in results with a simple DNF tag but no placement number?

Is part of the promise of this new system, that race organizers can easily and simply use whatever numerical values they want for each pen/cat? Will Zwift be varying these values for their own events in a random manner? Or will all ZRS events always use the same number values? Coincidence or required – the Tiny Race series is using the same score values as the Zwift Monthly series? It would seem to me that part of the value of a new system is to always be redefining the cats/pens in order to keep the entrants and winner rosters fresh?

Another question. Lowest pen in a 5-cat race is 0-225. Lowest pen in a “Low End” race is 0-200. This doesn’t outwardly seem like much was done in breaking up the D racers much?

@Wannie i would add no roll off make it longer for guys who exit the races.

They may not of quit just DC they say

We absolutely want to tackle serial quitters and rage quitting. We’re going to keep a close watch throughout the series, learning to tell the difference between legitimate disconnects due to tech issues and the ones doing it on purpose.

Does it really matter if legitimate or non-legitimate reason DNFs occur in handling the reporting/results? IRL, if someone has an equipment failure or a crash, isn’t this equivalent to their Wifi or HR monitor failing?

That why that need to treat that all the same that no confusion

I believe the approach adopted in ZR.app is a solid starting point where:

  1. If a rider quits an event (past x% of distance complete), no impact +/- is given to their score.
  2. These riders are still included in the results so that everyone else could still potentially benefit from the DNF’d riders score being factored into the finishing calculations.

Seems fair to say from the noise around this issue, something to address the DNF issue needs reviewing and including in the final release :+1:

That makes no sense. Anyone completing the event should count above anyone with a DNF.

Another way to put gentle pressure on serial quitters would be to publish their quit rate on their profile, on ZwiftPower, etc

I know Colin. In my original post, which you are quoting, I am simply quoting the Zwift wording used in the FAQ. My question (in italics) after that is my view, and matches what I wrote in my most recent post above. Cheers. :+1:

What difference does it make?
DNF is DNF.

I’ll add to my comment above.
All DNF show in results.
All DNF rank below the slowest finisher.
DNF’s are ranked by the distance from the start.
The first to quit will be the lowest and the other DNF’s are listed by distance travelled.

Let’s say my Racing Score doesn’t change between now and joining the 1810 zmonthly event on Monday that has Racing Score enabled.

Even if I finish where the model expects me to, so no Racing Score change (?), could my Racing Score still increase if I improved my 30sec-10mins power numbers, or decrease because my 90-day best numbers have lowered?

I think we need to be careful with DNFs and how they are handled. Giving a DNF a ranking may just cause the rider’s ranking to decrease, and this can by used to lower the ZRS numbers.
