Agree, Zwift want to make these kind of changes do so on the new courses. That would keep rider historical efforts consistent, after all this is a training platform, or is Zwift deciding to make it a game?
I don’t think this is the case.
I rode the Jungle this morning, Tron bike for the first 2 laps.
Windows 10 - Game version1.0.41097
you can see my Average speed going downhill is almost double than going up, but my power going down is about 15% lower.
This one is climbing a 5% hill in Harrogate. with the Tron.
Average power 255W for Average speed 13.7 km/h
Fair point and analysis, I was going off feel rather than data. It doesn’t change my view that this update is utter rubbish and doesn’t add anything to the Zwift experience and looking at other views online it appears I’m not alone.
I hope Zwift just unwind this feature and ditch it as opposed to trying to make it work. I’m
All in favour of it for the mountain bike but for everything else no!
It’s an admirable task to try and incorporate rolling resistance into the game but it’s not really that necessary and how would Zwift go about computing the rolling resistance for the Tron bike which is entirely fictitious or the sky roads in New York - half a quark times a muon??
Better to just leave it all as it was - just my view
We’ll also see issues when Zwift adjusts braking for descending and cornering so that we won’t actually be able to descend the mountain switchbacks at 60+ miles per hour.
That is so true, and since we all want new and exiting things we will need to accept that things will change, bike speed, road conditions, weather , physics and everything I can’t think of or even know of.
Exatly something new will be coming something from EA games or equal. These people pump so many money in quality programmers that every little request will be implemented. Just wait …
Hi Gerrie,
as it is clear, not everyone wants this new change, and to my knowledge
no one asked for it, perhaps Zwift could give users the option to turn this
new realism on or off, like we can with chat or that strange vision effect
etc. For races or events let organisers decide what to implement,
for the rest, let the Zwifter decide.
That way everyone could be happy.
A perfect Zwift world again.
Happy “Ride On” All
I get it, some people like it and some don’t, those that like it or don’t care is just not as vocal as me with my big mouth, LOL.
People don’t like change, but sometimes we need it.
We get a lot of things that we don’t ask for, and we ask for a lot of things we don’t get.
*Maybe Zwift should have done what fortnite just did
and blow up the map and create a new one. LOL Please don’t do it
I’m not seeing that. The last three app updates have updated to my ATV automatically, as did the latest TVOS update, 13.0, I think. I’m running the 4K 64GB model.
Some people turn off auto update on the ATV.
I’m with you on the option but there’s no way everyone would be happy.
Combing through the forums (fora?), I see tight-knit groups of folks who say they need Zwift to meet their needs. I’ve seen a couple who want a workout app and little else, for instance.
- Among other things, this change alters speed over ground, so the sprint KOM/QOM hunters will be outraged.
- People who didn’t understand why the Jungle Circuit and the causeway to the volcano kicked up dust but didn’t do anything else might like it. (I don’t run a Neo, so I don’t feel anything, anyway.)
- I know for a fact that this fractures some rides pretty badly.
- From comments by Jon at Zwift HQ, there is competitive pressure on Zwift to become more realistic.
What I’m most disappointed with is that Zwift didn’t announce the change to the community with advice to run off the the Drop Shop to get the right wheels/tires/frames. If Tron is a bad choice, just let us know.
Hi Gerrie and Paul,
if Zwift really did need to implement this then I think that they should have
initially made the change less noticeable along with more information on its
effects and a couple of setup suggestions. (Gravel wheels should have been
offered at time of update).
This would then give them the ability to increase the resistance/effect as
Zwifters became used to the change and the update would then feel that
it was ready for implementation.
The MTB section is a great idea and to have steering could be great also.
Zwift haven’t forced this on to its user base as 1) its not ready and 2) users
are not ready either.
Well in some ways, users are not ready for such a dramatic change to their
beloved Watopia.
I don’t see why it was rolled out here? I think it would have been better in say
the less loved Richmond, where users could try it and like it, or try it and loath it.
No damage done.
Watopia’s main routes are not the best place to try out something so dramatic, not
on such well ridden and well loved roads.
Road effect could be great, but for many this is too much, too soon.
Over and Out
The MTB should have been given to everyone as an option to use also (or maybe a level unlock), one shouldn’t have to win it (which I have been unable to do, my best effort was 8/10 stars after numerous attempts) to now have a nice ride through the Jungle. There will certainly be more than a few Zwifters who will never be able to get the MTB due to equipment and/or technology limitations (not everyone has a phone to run the companion app on, mounts for steering wheels, or if you are on rollers you will never be able to steer).
See I can sometimes agree. Yes, there should be at least be a option (other than riding the steering test section) to get a MTB or similar bike for the gravel sections.
According to Zwift Insider:
every wheelset except the new mountain bike wheels is using the same rolling resistance right now, meaning all the road bike wheels are going to roll pretty slow on dirt…
No bike/wheelset combination comes close to the Zwift Mountain setup when riding the Jungle Circuit… at least not right now. Of course, Zwift will be releasing more wheels that roll better in virtual dirt. Then things will get interesting!
I did the B grade “XRS Longer and Hard Race” a few weeks back. Dug really deep over the epic KOM and formed a nice break. Then hit the jungle gravel and it was like I got a flat tyre. The guy in front didn’t change his w/kg but simply disappeared over the horizon. Even at 6w/kg I couldn’t close back in. Then I got caught and dropped by C and D graders doing much less watts before I finally escaped the jungle. Ultimately abandoned a 70km race at 50km due to being completely gassed and demoralised from trying to hold those wheels in the jungle.
Last night had a 1hr power PB on the zwiftHQ “volcano circuit after party race”. Was feeling strong after months of training and covered any attacks on the asphalt. But every time the blob hit the gravel after the climb out of ocean boulevard, or the gravel road toward the volcano circuit after the Italian village, it blew apart ridiculously- the front guys were not attacking, or putting out extra power- just on iOS or an older version of Zwift.
These updates are ruining the races. Make gravel sections harder for everyone- by all means. It’s a fun idea. But force all racers to be on the most recent Zwift version first!
i really dislike the new dirt “feel” for many reasons, and i hope zwift will consider rolling back this last update or have the option of turning it off, for many reasons.
1 i have been training for several months of specific courses on watopia, i judge them specifically by time and they got all screwed up now
2 it ruins the momentum for us roadies. have dirt specific routes is fine, dont change our existing routes
3, it made it much harder to keep the group together on the group ride.
everyone in our particular group hated it, dutch diesel cycling. nearly everyone on the face book site hates it, the feedback is universally bad
please give us the option to turn off, or roll it back.
i dont like it either BUT i would love to have this feature in races.
The best solution in my eyes would be to make it an optional feature!
Could be worse you all…… I hear that Zwift are planning dollops of Cow Dung on the Yorkshire Courses to make it more realistic.
The easy option is to do a bike change before you just hit the gravel on the jungle section.
Takes about 30 seconds to do.
To not change your bike means that you could loose 2 mins. 2 x bike changes is 50 - 60 seconds max - gain of 1 minute plus.
If the Pros do bike changes - so can you.
The bike change is an interesting thought but, again due to the different Zwift platforms, probably can’t be used equally by all.
For example, because the rider has to be at a complete stop in order to change bikes, PC (and perhaps Mac) users have a distinct advantage because they can hit the ‘A’ key to stop quickly. On an iOS or TV OS version, however, this is not an option, so you have to wait for your avatar to coast to a stop before you can do anything. And if you happen to not stop in the right place, your avatar might coast for quite a while.
Also, not everyone has the ability (i.e. something to allow the front wheel to turn freely)to get the MTB, this putting them at a distinct disadvantage on dirt courses. Perhaps this issue will be negated in the future with some dirt-specific wheels in the Drop Shop, but until then there will be a large chunk of folks with no MTB.
