I live in Australia and am paying the normal price for Zwift. Why are there hardly any events or anything at all really happening during the whole of winter?

There’s plenty ongoing and the event calendar is fairly well packed 24/7.
To say there’s nothing happening in clearly wrong.
Are you possibly seeing this issue, which Zwift say should be fixed now? I.e. no events at all.
I saw plenty of events just before. Are you not having the issue mentioned before?
I am in same country as you and see lots of events - but none are very interesting so I skip them unless they are on a special route we cannot ride normally (Macaron).
Blame the northern summer—everyone is out enjoying real life 
right now! Don’t worry, seasonal depression will bring them back to your screen soon. 
I think this refers to the issue with events not showing up in game, which should have been fixed yesterday.
