Help with ERG Mode in Workouts

Can someone help me to understand how to use the ERG mode in workouts? I’m planning on scheduling the FTP Builder plus several other cycling training plans in the near future.
How are you ensured to get a maximum effort in your scheduled workout?
Do you set the mode to Target Power (ERG) to your FTP and then are you off and running?
I’m using a Wahoo Kickr Snap, does the workout automatically adjust the flywheel tension for maximum effort?

Are the workouts/plans tailored to any specific routes to ensure you get challenged?

Thanks in advance.

Workouts are based on your FTP, you should do an FTP test first before starting a plan (unless you know your FTP already and have recently tested).

The resistance will automatically change, just keep an even cadence and the trainer will do the rest.

There’s no such thing as a maximum effort in ERG mode, because maximum can’t have a power target or it wouldn’t be maximum. But as Mike mentioned, having an accurate FTP setting is important for everything that isn’t maximum.

Thanks for your response. My current FTP is 191 and will this to configure the workouts.

Thanks for your feedback……

Just make sure it (FTP) is set correctly in the game and you are all set.

You do not have to configure it on workouts. You simply need to have your FTP correct on your profile.

A note about training with ERG - you pick a gear and stick to it, the trainer adjusts the wattage. Otherwise you end up in the spiral of death. (Just mentioning it, because it took me a stab or two to get used to ERG ode training.)

Tip: If you’re using a smart trainer, then in ERG mode you should forget that you have gear selection buttons. It doesn’t matter what gear you pick. Just pedal at whatever your comfortable cadence is, and the trainer will automatically adjust the load so you are generating the appropriate watts.

Do not shift gears in an attempt to control your watts or cadence. Just pedal.
