By “gate” do you mean “fence”? The laser wall (fence) in group rides is meant to keep group rides group focused. If you ride beyond the fence for too long or the ride leader chooses so, you will get zapped out of the event to ride on your own. Thus, people have to stay behind the fence, which is a certain distance ahead of the leader, which usually keeps everyone riding together.
