Group ride events should have a "Fence ON or OFF" button :)

Hello!

It would be nice if you could see on the event page of a group ride if they are using a Fence.
Especially for newer riders.
Not having a fence (aka people jumping away from the group, deregulating or upping the pace, flyers etc) can really be demotivating for a newer rider.

Herefore it would be nice if you could actually select group rides that have Fence ON.
Or vica versa choose groups with Fence OFF if you prefer that.

Anyways. Would be a nice implementation.

Zwiftpower shows this information but it is still at the discretion of the ride leader whether or not to use it or to make it Zappy.

They have.. the ride leader controls the fence and sets the distance from the yellow.. they can also turn it on or off..

BUT.. stay with the yellow as you are supposed to and you will never go through the fence..

Simples…

The zappitude is in the event settings, beyond the control of the ride leader (unless they also are the event organizer, but I think changing it still requires ZHQ involvement and anyway can’t be done mid-event).

The ride leader will maintain advertized pace. As long as you join the correct pace ride
(for you). Just stay with yellow, don’t worry about the flyers. Or the fence. Just ride with the ride leader, and enjoy yourself

I support this feature request because it’s asking for something that would help new riders decide if an event is a good choice for them, whether they want the fence or not.

In fenced rides my goal is to never see the fence at all, so I either ride right around the leader, or with the sweeps if I want a higher effort. Sweeping is great fun and very engaging.

Flyers can absolutely blow up groups and wreck the vibe of an entire ride. Saying ‘just ignore them’ might be like telling someone to just ignore the person on the bus with you who keeps insulting you to your face. Some will be able to, some won’t. It becomes harder if someone is enjoying a group ride partially for the chat, and the chat turns into people complaining about/yelling at flyers. The fence can solve that.

Try this site (you’ll have to fix the broken link). Additionally you can access additional filter to include “Zap Flyers”, or “No Kick Mode”

Sorry @Tom_J. I somewhat disagree. If someone is in your face, yelling at you. You have no choice, but to deal with it. If someone is in the front of the bus, talking loudly on there cell phone. You might tell them to knock it off, but probably just complain about it (in your head).
I agree flyers can and do blow up a group ride. But a good leader will remind them once or twice. If they don’t return, let them go. Just worry about the group that wants to be in the group ride. Don’t sweat the small things

I’ll go way OT, but isn’t it funny how people hate folks talking on their phone, but are ok if they’re having a conversation with someone sitting next to them? Is it because we can only hear half of the conversation?

Seen as we are off topic, just my 2 cents.
The only time I have a real problem with people talking on there cell phone, is when they’re at checkout or somewhere it’s affecting others. As for someone talking on there cell phone, or visiting with the person beside them, in a public place. I could care less. But as my Mom would say…INSIDE VOICE. Nobody wants to hear you.

I think the checkout one is about not respecting the person that’s right in front of you who you should be treating like a human. Being on the phone at a self-checkout is fine. Being on the phone while a human being is helping you, maybe asking you ‘Did you find everything okay?’, etc is treating that human being like a self-checkout machine. Literally dehumanizing them.

On the ignoring people thing, I do agree that it’s ideal to ignore people who are doing things to harsh your vibe. But I don’t think it’s always easy, and the fence is a handy solution. You wake up in the morning, in a good mood, looking forward to a peaceful ride with a nice chat, and suddenly the whole thing turns into a mess because of flyers. I think it’s plausible and understandable to have that little thing be nagging you all day. We can say ‘it shouldn’t matter’, but things like that do effect us all the time. You can’t escape having people negatively effects your life at all. But you can do things to minimize it sometimes. Why force people to try to be stoics about this issue when you can use the fence to solve the problem?

I think we pretty much agree on all this stuff. It’s just common decency, and respect for others.
When it comes to group rides, it’s just crazy to join a ride that’s advertised at 1.8 watts, if you don’t plan on riding at that pace.
I join a small group ride on Saturday. Some of us like to sprint, and we do. After the sprint we drop back and ride with yellow or red beacon, until the next sprint. It’s great fun. There’s almost always a couple flyers, and we just let them go. Not worth worrying about. Maybe it would be different if we had a live fence, but probably not. They’re gone, either way.

For sure some rides won’t be negatively affected. And some people won’t be on a given day either. I know myself there are days when I have more resilience than others, and days when the littlest stupid things set me off.

Fortunately I make sure to never ever bother anyone with any of the things I do
