Apple M1 Support [SOLVED]

So what graphics/profile settings are you getting with the M2 Pro Mac mini?
Also what spec is your M2 Pro mini?

I’m looking to upgrade my Mac but I’m waiting on seeing how the Zwift graphics turn out.

See my previous post

I have a fully spec’ed up M2 Pro Mac Mini (32GB, upgraded processor, 1TB SSD). Likely the base model would be quite fine also.

Thanks for the quick reply Marc!

Yeah surely the base M2 Pro would work nicely

Glad to help. The reason I spec’ed up the Mini is that I also run Streamlabs OBS while Zwifting, so I wanted to maximize the multi-core performance. The reality is that Zwift alone doesn’t come close to fully utilizing the power of these machines, even with the settings dialled up.

I used to run the same setup on a base M1 Mini, which could handle all the same load, but not at 4K, and OBS was very laggy.

It appears that Zwift on the Mac has fully transitioned over to Metal, including M1/M2 computers. I imagine this was a huge effort and I appreciate the work of the dev team to make this happen across the Apple lineup.

Can we get some kind of timeline as to when this transition might actually translate to a better experience for powerful Apple Silicon computers (e.g., shadows on riders, higher resolutions)?

Excellent, I can’t wait until they fully optimise zwift for these platforms!

Big :+1:t2: and many thanks @Jon for sharing all the detailed info and giving us hope for the Apple Mx future. I appreciate it must have been hard work to get all this done and it’s great to know it’s finally happening.

As always, more options will make people happy. Let them decide if they prefer quality over frame rates.

Just wanted to thank you for this update Jon. Super helpful for us to understand where things are at.

Looks like shadows are appearing on the Mac Pro M2 I have. Has anything changed recently? It’s running in Ultra resolution but Zwiftalizer is still showing Medium profile. Running my M2 Pro side by side next to a PC running in 4K showed almost identical graphic profile clocking around 100fps on my M2.

It’s been that way for a while on the M2 but not M1. M2 gets Medium with shadows. M1 gets High with no shadows - they nerfed the profile for the M1, presumably because it can’t handle it. M1 profile is really more like Basic.

Great to see some background on this, thanks Jon!

Any roadmap on iOS app parity for M-series devices? iPads appear to be severely graphically limited compared to the macOS app. Maybe part of future graphics options?

That great to hear! Nice.

hmm… looks like Zwift just removed the Ultra resolution option on my M2 and M2 Pro. Are you seeing the same? I only have up to 1080p profile now and graphics doesn’t look as crisp as it did a couple of days ago.

On my 2021 M1 MacBookPro I still have the 1440p option in settings and haven’t noticed a change. I don’t have an M2 to test. Doing the Zwiftalizer search, I see M2 Pro users running 4K resolution in early February. No data after that.

My M2 Pro shows 1080p as the max option. 3440x1440 display res.

Yeah I’m wondering if something changed here. My graphics now look a lot more cartoony/simple despite Zwiftalizer reporting it’s using “high”.

For those of you using M2 machines that have noticed a change, have you lost the rider shadow as well?

M2s have never had Ultra profile. You can fake it to get 4K resolution and better visual detail, as per my previous post on this thread, but M2s get (and always have gotten) Medium profile (which also includes rider shadows). M1s get High profile. There’s a bug such that High on M1 doesn’t get proper shadows, it’s been like that for over a year, despite many complaints to Zwift.

Nope, rider shadows are there for me on M2, even using my “hack” to get “sort of Ultra” with 4K resolution.

Hmm… I tested Zwift on my M2 Pro the day these machines came out and had ultra resolution with medium profile. Despite the medium profile, graphics looked really nice with a lot of details. Riders shadow was added later. I was averaging close to 100fps. However, something changed on mine this past week and now graphics look worse than ever before and lost the ultra profile :man_shrugging:
