Zwift 10-12 Week FTP Builder

I am new to Zwift and indoor cycling in general. During warmer weather I mtn bike 4-5 days per week. My setup is a Zwift:Ride with a wahoo kickr core. The only issue I’m having is that the cadence is ridiculous - for me. In order to keep up/down with the wattage goal the cadence is often 120 rpm or even higher. Is that normal? I can’t “shift” in the ftp builder at least I can’t find a way to. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. I would like to get into the 90~ rpm range. More resistance please!

Are you using ERG mode? If so you have to ignore the more power / less power prompts on the screen (they should not even exist when in ERG mode). You just have to wait for the trainer to respond, so stay at 90 rpm and wait for the trainer to change the resistance to bring you to the power target.

Thanks Paul. Yes I’m using ERG mode. Alright I’ll try that next time. So if I stay at 90 rpm the resistance will auto update to get to the wattage goal?

Yes the way you should think about it is when you are in ERG mode, it is the job of the software and the trainer to force you to hit the power target. When you are not in ERG mode, it’s your job to get to the power target. When the software and trainer are in control, you can’t make it hit the target. You just have to wait for it to happen. I see this as a design flaw in the software because the UI tells you “more power” but when in ERG mode, that’s not your job. The more steady your cadence is, the less work the trainer needs to do to adjust the resistance.

Thanks Paul! I’ll give it a go.

Worked just like you said. Thanks Paul!
