Couldn’t possibly comment without seeing the accounts in question.
That zFTP of 249W is just under the Watt Floor limit for Cat A…from what i’m seeing in the last 2 months it looks like zFTP is around 30W to 40W lower than 20min.
In my race on Sunday a rider did 304W for 90mins but his zFTP is 305W…his 20min was 4.5Wkg

Im just jealous, I wish I could lose 12kgs in 5 months & maintain my 300w 20min power whilst being over the age of 50…
It’s good to gain weight when you’re at the top of C. Once you drift into B, you’d better get on a diet plan.
Since zFTP doesn’t seem to reliably update on ZwiftPower, I never assume it’s current.
It updates at the start of the next event you take part in.
It doesn’t seem to always work. I’ve noticed E cat riders with recent rides many times. My suggestion is to go select all the E category riders in the database who have a ride since the switch to CE category on ZP. See how many there are. Should be zero.
I haven’t seen any E’s with recent rides (by ride, it needs to be a group ride, race or group workout).
You however probably have and are about to send me a list ![]()
I wish I could but I don’t think there’s a way for me to pull up a list of E category riders through the web UI to review. I haven’t seen one in the last week but have seen quite a few randomly. I suspect the update process fetching from CE mostly works and occasionally fails, so over time the E’s should go away if they keep doing events, but if the update isn’t 100% reliable then there may be riders with a non-E category whose ZP profile is not up to date. Finding those would require comparing ZP profile data to “live” CE data, which I can’t see.
I will try to remember to pass along any suspect E’s that I notice.
I’ll annoy David and get him to see how many there are.
It’ll be really annoying if I waste his time with my suspicions ![]()
There was a problem with some accounts not being refreshed at a start of an event.
Last week on Monday there was an update to ZwiftPower that should have corrected that problem.
Another 2 or 3 threads/posts today all repeating the exact same thing about the current state of CE…
I’d suggest it’s fairly consistent feedback that things are broke but it will probably fall on deaf ears?
I don’t know how the feedback is taken but it seems clear the answer is that they’re pretty far into a replacement that incorporates results and sticking with that path instead of tweaking the current system. I’m fairly certain the replacement is not a holy grail but will also need continued development and separating the concepts of pens from categories.
It wasn’t that long ago results based system was 2 years away.
It could be 2 weeks, it could be 3 months, but only in the last few days it is suddenly being talked about more freely as there is a general acceptance that CE is broke.
Don’t forget people made this change - are these people learning from their mistakes or accepting it is broken, as if they are not, that’s a fairly big disconnect between devs and users.
Also, the current CE system is likely to give the starting point for any results based system - we want the data to be as good as possible to give the system a good as chance to make the right impression?
Am I missing a post about the new rankings system? Seems from comments in here it’s more advanced than I thought, can anyone point me in the direction of any info?
From the December tech update:
Scoring: As has been said before, this project is built on a large technical foundation that will afford us freedom in the future to make changes quickly during testing and in response to community feedback. We have made some progress over the holiday and are rapidly approaching the ability to begin testing in events.
At a high level, the goals of adding scoring to racing are:
- Create a race environment that rewards Zwifters that race smartly and to the best of their ability by scoring their results, no matter where you finish on the day
- Give Zwifters a system of categorization or ranking that is not determined purely by power
- Help make racing more easily understood and more exciting for more Zwifters
We are presently looking at multiple scoring/ranking options to identify strong contenders for what we feel would best create a fun, engaging, and fair racing experience. Community feedback will also play a part in helping us make the choices as we keep progressing on scoring your race results. We have also scheduled work to examine the benefits of compound score to compliment our scoring/ranking structure in the future. If you’re curious what compound score is or does, you can read all the details at this source . The simple high level explanation is that compound score will be used with the express purpose of seeding Zwifters into an initial score or rank when no racing data exists for a given Zwifter for any reason.
Like we mentioned in the November update, we will have posts in the coming weeks with more detail on scoring, so stay tuned!
I don’t think Zwift has actually followed through with the more detail on scoring in the coming weeks updates though.
Thanks - appreciate that.
I don’t understand how CE can be though of as broken when race entries are 100% better than when we only had Zwift power self selection.
We have one or maybe two people in the wrong category that includes people who are not on ZP.
@Gerrie_Delport_ODZ Back in my day, it was Open world for racing, outside ride did jump into the race mid point. and tow riders around.
Because while it’s 1000x better than straight 95% of 20min, the algorithm does some weird things sometimes (e.g. my CP/zFTP dropped over 20w by putting in some strong 5min efforts).
But regardless any time there’s hard category limits, the lines have to be drawn somewhere and there will always be someone unhappy about being moved to the “wrong” side of the line.
And there’s still more to it than just numbers…I’m fairly low in the ranges for both zFTP and zMAP for my category but my results are better than those would suggest. Which is where results-based comes in and is going to be really interesting to see. If it’s anything like ZRapp it’s going to be great.
