The above is why banked XP as a concept must be taken away and burned and never ever come back. No good comes from it.
If people earned the XP, put them on the corresponding level right away. Don’t force them to do double the effort to get what they have already earned. And never, ever reset XP of users.
And future levels should be infinite so we never have to talk about this issue ever again.
Levels above 100 should be 20,000XP gap as they are currently. That’s reasonable.
Zwift completely bodged the new levels when introduced. Allowed some people to hit level 100 really quickly and then completely changed the rules after they made the mistake. So some people on level 100 had to put in a fraction the effort that others had. I went from needing to ride for months to years to get level 100 whilst others only had to do it for months.complete botch job by zwift and a really poor resolution when they changed the calculation which was significantly unfair to some users. There are people with half my xp that hit 100 months/ years before me.
When levels were extended from 25 to 50 people could choose to work through them at the normal rate or at an accelerated rate if they had banked XP (8 times the normal speed I think, it was a long time ago so i may be wrong on that)
seems reasonable if new levels are added to let people choose again but maybe with a third option of just going immediately to the level their banked XP would put them at.
you are never going to please everyone imposing one solution to everyone.
Rumor has it that a new expansion for levels 100+ is coming soon.
I hope this time the implementation will be fairer.
In a game, the same rules must apply to all players; otherwise, it's pointless.
Old System:
Level 49 > 50 requires 20,000 XP, totaling 500,000 XP
Level 59 > 60 requires 30,000 XP, totaling 750,000 XP
Level 99 > 100 requires 20,000 XP, totaling 907,000 XP
New System (Level 60-100 expansion in January 2024), for players who hadn't
yet reached Level 50:
Level 49 > 50 requires 5,500 XP, totaling 161,000 XP
Level 59 > 60 requires 6,500 XP, totaling 223,000 XP
Level 99 > 100 requires 20,000 XP, totaling 591,000 XP
This means the old players were only halfway through reaching
Level 54-55 where the newbies are already reaching level 100!!!
(All data is from Eric's informative Zwift website, many thanks for that.)
Either everyone is catapulted into the corresponding level according
to the same scheme based on their collected XP (even if the garage
then bursts at the seams with helmets, socks, and other unnecessary goodies),
or the veterans get unlimited bananas and turtle shells
like in "Super Mario Kart" and can have fun playing.
As consolation, there are many hours and kilometers that have made
you stronger and fitter.
Ps.: I'm currently at level 99 with 3700 XP, remaining at level 100.
Ok. I tried the brain trust that is Zwift forums and got nowhere. So, I tried Zwift directly and got quick and disappointing answers. I can share details if anyone wants - it’s boring.
TLDR: Zwift is in the money making business, engagement drives subscriptions, subscriptions are money.
Zwift has decided the best way to maximize engagement is to maximize the gamification of the platform. And buy their biggest rival - Rouvy. Zwift thinks ‘accelerating’ is game play. Sigh.
A few thoughts then I will go away and ride for a few more years:
Does my banked xp earn interest?
Why should I have to pay Zwift while I am ‘accelerating’. I’m working through xp I have already paid for. Why am I paying again? We should get Zwift for free while we work through our banked xp or we should get credit for time served.
They are taking advantage of us.
Their unilateral decision that they know best how to use our work is not ok. I bet it was a man or men making these decisions.
Oh. And it’s just a game and none of this matters. I’ll see you on Zwift. I won’t be xp farming.
All the brain trust can tell you is that yeah it looks like it’s working like they intended it to work. I believe that is true. You decide whatever you think about that but so far no amount of complaints about it have been successful at deterring them from using this method when new levels are introduced, so in that sense it’s the expected thing. I understand the disappointment.
There are many who Zwift for free. There are ways. Sure. Your name changes and you don’t keep xp and levels and socks (gasp), but you get full access and can ride, race, etc just like usual. I think it might be time. I would lose my lovely fully upgraded Tron, so be it. Levels and xp are now completely meaningless. Why pay? Do your homework. I’ll see you on Zwift or Rouvy or whatever they want to call it.
