Show me your Zwift pain cave

This is just a weird small hallway we never used except to store junk. Really perfect except bike shoes are a little sketchy on the tile…

wahoo snap, 4k apple tv, 43 inch 4k insignia tv, air pods, fan.

Here is my pain cave. Is it blasphemy to have a Peloton included?

Basic setup in the back of my living room. I recently got an Apple mouse for control (also use the companion app), and moved the MacBook to the stool behind the TV so I wouldn’t get sweat all over it.

2018 Kickr
32" TCL TV
MacBookPro
Workout mat from Amazon
Honeywell fan from Amazon (need to order another)
Sonos for cranking music

Just getting into Zwift for running. Love the app, think it’ll be great once/as the running community comes on board. A little bit of thinking to get a rig built. Currently rocking (pic below):

  1. Bowflex BXT216 Treadmill (blue tooth)
  2. 6th Gen Apple Ipod (to run app)
  3. Wacky Third Party IOS App to mirror to Chromecast
  4. Chromecast

Ultimate Goal:

  1. Bowflex BXT216 Treadmill (blue tooth)
  2. Android Samsung Galaxy S9+ (my phone) [Android in beta and yet to have BXT support]
  3. Chromecast (yet to have chromecast support).

I do have a StrydePod on order, so I can work that in there some how too.

Keep up the good work Zwift!

Wow, some nice setups, except… Am I the only one who doesn’t put my head within 3 feet of the TV? Were you guys raised by wolves?

I try to stay back a bit, as the sweat from huffing and puffing sometimes makes it as far as the TV screen.

Continuing the discussion from Show me your Zwift pain cave:

Personally I love looking at peoples setups. Those with space to those who will move mountains to squeeze exercise into their life. Love the orange Zwift walls albeit I’m not sure I could tolerate that colour in my house of beige lol. The only thing I would do differently in ours is to lower the tv (too scared to ask my husband to move it for the third time lol). It’s set for tv height whereas I think lower to eye looking down at road height (about 2ft from floor) would be more natural and less pain to my neck. Thoughts from anyone who has done this appreciated!

Hi Jenifer,
I have my screen lower rather than higher. Its about 3ft from the floor and could
possibly go lower. Its ok for the moment though.
I’m also not too close to the screen about 5ft, even though its only 26 inch.
Quite happy with the setup, but there is always room for improvement.

There is, lol. Always room! I do agree a lower down screen may be better. J

Here is mine… After purchasing the Wahoo gear only about 2 weeks ago, I just cleared an area in my basement, got this set up, and have been tweaking it. I mostly re-purposed old electronics I had around doing nothing. I also have my TV mounted low. I turned an old printer desk into a TV cabinet by mounting 2x4’s on the back and installing a TV wall mount I had left over from an old media room setup. This lets me angle the TV perfectly (TCL 49" 4k). Currently I am running off of an old laptop but I just ordered a GTX 1060 for an older desktop I had already to hopefully drive Zwift at 4k 60fps.

I got burned out from riding a trainer years ago but I must say, with the Kickr and Zwift, I like it a lot! I am looking forward to building some more base miles this year…

I enjoy seeing all these Zwift pain caves - I have kids in college so my dream pain cave will have to wait… and no one would want to see my temporary setup in my daughter’s bedroom while she is away at OSU (go Bucs!). It is impressive only in its cheapness. A $25 sensor let me check the free trial on my iPhone 7 (note: a 4.7" screen is a pain for 55 year old eyes), and another $35 completed my setup now that I’m paying for the app:

  1. BIKE: c. 1987 Trek 330 Elance (free - rescued from the landfill, 6-sp indexed DT shifter on friction mode for use with a 7-sp freewheel)
  2. TRAINER: c. 2001 Performance (pre-Travel Trac) Traveler Century (re-branded Elite Volare Lite, free using member points after 2001 bike purchase)
  3. SENSOR: CooSpo BK8 speed+cadence sensor off Amazon ($25)
  4. MAT: old towel
  5. FAN: 20" 4-speed Lasko Cyclone (free - inherited from in-laws)
  6. ZWIFT: iPhone 7 attached to stem with mount off Amazon ($9)
  7. DISPLAY: 19" widescreen Acer (DVI/VGA) monitor c. 2008 (free - inherited from in-laws) sitting on make-up vanity
  8. CONNECTION: Apple Lightning Digital AV cord ($20 Craigslist) from iPhone to Amazon Basics 6’ HDMI to DVI cord ($6) for visuals, Bluetooth earbuds for audio
  9. HEART RATE: Apple Watch Series 1 with Zwift app

Total=$60.

An available laptop would have let me use the companion app on my iPhone and saved some cost ($26 cables) but also would have added cost for an ANT + dongle. As is, the 19" monitor is bigger and fits better than any laptop in the available space on the front edge of my daughter’s vanity. It is still a vast improvement over my 2001 setup - bike on trainer in front of 15" CRT iMac playing Tour de France DVD’s.

While the trainer is unsupported by Zwift, my data is very close to real world thanks to info on Elite’s mag resistance units from theSufferFest.com (using Elite Mag Speed or Novo Force in setup) - my heart rate at a sustained 22mph on the flats is identical to real life…

Basement setup:

  • Bike: Giant Revolt 2
  • Trainer: Kinetic Smart Rock and Roll
  • Wahoo Bluetooth Cadence/Speed Sensor
  • Apple Watch Heart Rate
  • AppleTV for running Zwift
  • 30’ HP Monitor from Woot awhile back
  • EZM Mobile TV Cart since it doubles as a YouTube station for when my wife is watching sewing/quilting tutorials or when the nephews want to watch Minecraft videos.
  • Foam Exercise Mat Jigsaw Pieces also from Woot
  • Honeywell 12" Fan x2, but one keeps getting borrowed
  • Tiny footstool because I’m old and fat, and sometimes I get wobbly like a baby faun after harder rides

Christopher, I agree wholeheartedly with keeping the monitor low. A high monitor placement will put your neck in extension and put you at risk for c-spine disc problems. Maybe not an issue when you are young, but certainly is as you age!

Couple of quick pics. I had to lower the monitor after I developed numbness in my hands from prolonged neck extension. I also put ceiling to floor drapes along an entire wall as well as carpeting over hardwood floor to eliminate as much sound as possible. Very quiet with my Wahoo Snap.

Totally agree on the TV placement. Mine started much higher and now is about where yours are.

Here is mine. Also find the lower TV much more convenient…

Amazing setups all. Some very nice gear. There is one thing I see missing from everyone’s pain cave in this thread, plants! My plants go through a slow death cycle every winter but certainly enjoy the CO2 I put out in mass while zwifting, and I enjoy the free Oxygen supply they offer, plus it seems more like I’m outside.
